CHAPTER FOURTEEN — Running Into What You Never Left Behind

707 Words
Some people don’t come back into your life… they just appear where you never stopped carrying them. ———— It wasn’t planned. Keira wasn’t thinking about him that day. Not consciously. She had somewhere to be. A small event tied to her internship. Nothing important enough to feel nervous about. Nothing personal enough to feel emotional. Just another step forward. That’s what she told herself. The room was filled with soft conversations. People moving. Voices overlapping. Keira stood near the edge of it all. Observing more than participating. That hadn’t changed. She adjusted her sleeve absentmindedly. Took a small breath. Looked up— And froze. Not dramatically. Not visibly. But completely. Because across the room— standing in a space that didn’t belong to her world anymore— was Ziven. He hadn’t changed. Or maybe he had. But not in ways she could name immediately. Still calm. Still composed. Still… him. But something about him felt more distant now. More settled in a life that didn’t include her. Ziven felt it before he saw her. That quiet shift. That awareness he hadn’t felt in a long time. He turned— And there she was. For a moment— everything else in the room disappeared. Not because it actually did. But because neither of them was paying attention to it anymore. They didn’t move immediately. Didn’t wave. Didn’t smile. Just… looked. Like they were confirming something they had both tried to accept separately. You’re still real. Keira was the first to break the distance. Not fully. Just enough. She walked closer. Slowly. Carefully. “Hi,” she said. Her voice was steady. But softer than she expected. Ziven nodded slightly. “Hi.” The same word. Different weight. “You’re here,” she said. It wasn’t a question. “Yeah,” he replied. “Work thing.” She nodded. “Same.” Silence followed. But this silence— wasn’t empty. It was full of everything they hadn’t said. Everything they had avoided. Everything they had carried alone. “You look…” Ziven started. Then stopped. Keira waited. “Different,” he finished. She gave a small breath. “Good different?” He held her gaze. “Stronger.” That landed somewhere deep. Because it wasn’t just about how she looked. It was about everything she had gone through without him. “You do too,” she said. Ziven smiled faintly. Not fully. But enough to feel familiar. Another pause. This one— harder. Because now they had acknowledged each other. And didn’t know what came next. “I didn’t expect to see you here,” Keira admitted. “Me neither,” he said. A beat. “But I’m not surprised,” he added quietly. She tilted her head slightly. “Why?” Ziven looked at her. “Because you always show up where you’re supposed to be.” That felt like something more than a compliment. Keira didn’t respond immediately. Because she didn’t know if he still believed that about her. Or if he was just remembering who she used to be. “Are you… okay?” he asked. The same question from before. But this time— it felt different. More careful. More real. Keira nodded slowly. “I’m getting there.” That was the most honest answer she could give. Ziven nodded. “Yeah,” he said. “Me too.” Silence settled again. But this time— it didn’t feel like distance. It felt like something paused. Waiting. Not broken. Not fixed. Just… there. Someone called Ziven’s name from across the room. Reality. Again. He glanced back briefly. Then returned his attention to her. “I should—” he started. Keira nodded. “I know.” Neither of them moved immediately. Because leaving again— felt different now. Not like before. Not final. Just… incomplete. “It was good seeing you,” Ziven said softly. Keira held his gaze. “Yeah,” she replied. “It was.” And this time— they both meant it. They walked away in different directions. But something had shifted. Not dramatically. Not completely. But enough to change the way the silence between them felt. Because now— it wasn’t just absence anymore. It was possibility
