CHAPTER FOUR — The Way It Started Feeling Real

673 Words
Some connections don’t announce themselves becoming important… they just quietly do. It didn’t feel like a decision. That was the strange part. Keira didn’t choose to sit longer. Ziven didn’t ask her to stay. But somehow— neither of them moved like they used to. The café felt different today. Not louder. Not busier. Just… more aware of them. “You always do that,” Ziven said suddenly. Keira looked up from her cup. “Do what?” “Pause before you say something real.” A small smile touched her lips before she could stop it. “You notice too much,” she replied softly. “Only when it matters.” That line lingered. Longer than it should have. Keira felt it settle somewhere in her chest—quiet, unfamiliar, warm in a way that made her uncomfortable. “I don’t know why you say things like that,” she said quietly. Ziven leaned back slightly. “Like what?” “Like they mean more than they should.” A pause. Then— “Maybe they do,” he said. And that was it. No explanation. No correction. Just truth… left hanging between them. Keira looked away first again. But this time— she didn’t feel the urge to leave immediately. That was new. “You came back,” Ziven said after a moment. She glanced at him. “I said I would.” He nodded slightly. “But you don’t always do what you say.” That made her pause. Not offended. Just… seen. “Is that supposed to be a compliment or an accusation?” she asked softly. “Neither,” he said. A beat. “Just observation.” Silence settled again. But it wasn’t empty anymore. It felt… shared. Like something was forming in the space neither of them knew how to name. Keira noticed it then. The way she didn’t feel rushed to fill silence anymore. The way sitting across from him didn’t feel like effort. The way time moved differently when he was there. Ziven’s voice broke the quiet again. “You’re different when you relax.” Keira looked at him quickly. “I’m not relaxed.” “You are,” he said simply. A pause. Then, softer— “You just don’t notice it yet.” That should have felt like too much. Too personal. Too early. But instead— it felt true. Keira looked down at her hands. Trying to steady herself. “I don’t usually stay this long in places,” she admitted quietly. Ziven didn’t respond immediately. Just watched her. Like he was choosing his words carefully for once. “Maybe you’re just used to leaving too soon,” he said. That landed differently. Not heavy. But deep. Keira exhaled slowly. “You make everything sound like it means something.” “It does,” he said. Simply. Without hesitation. And for the first time— Keira didn’t know how to respond. Because something about the way he said it made her feel like he wasn’t talking about the café anymore. A silence stretched between them. But this one wasn’t uncertain. It was… calm. Almost safe. Keira realized she wasn’t thinking about leaving anymore. That scared her more than she expected. “You’re quiet today,” Ziven said softly. “I’m always quiet,” she replied. A faint smile appeared on his face. “No,” he said. “Today is different.” Keira finally looked at him properly. And for a moment— she let herself stay in that eye contact longer than usual. Something shifted. Subtle. Unspoken. But real. “I don’t know what this is becoming,” she admitted softly. Ziven didn’t look away. “Neither do I.” A pause. Then— “But I don’t think I want it to stop,” he added quietly. That was the closest they had come. To saying it. Without saying it. Keira felt it settle inside her. Warm. Unsteady. Honest. And for the first time— she didn’t run from it.
