CHAPTER SIX — The Things That Almost Happened😌

614 Words
Some interruptions don’t break moments… they just remind you they were real. It started with someone else noticing. Keira didn’t see it at first. Not the way Ziven’s expression changed slightly. Not the way his silence sharpened for a moment. Not the way his eyes stopped resting on her the same way. It was just another ordinary day. Or it was supposed to be. Until a voice interrupted the space between them. “Keira?” She turned. A familiar face. Someone from her academic circle. Someone who smiled too easily. Ziven noticed immediately. Even before Keira responded. “Oh… hi,” she said, slightly caught off guard. The conversation was light. Too light. Questions. Laughter. Small updates about school life. Nothing important. But Ziven wasn’t part of it. He stayed quiet. Watching. Not obviously. But enough. And Keira felt it. Even while she was speaking. When the person finally left, the air between them had changed. Slightly tighter. Slightly colder. “You know him well?” Ziven asked. Keira blinked. “Just a coursemate.” A pause. “That’s not what I meant,” he said softly. She studied him. There it was. Something different in his tone. Not anger. Not accusation. Something quieter. “Are you okay?” she asked gently. Ziven leaned back slightly. “I’m fine.” But he wasn’t fully convincing. That was new. Keira noticed something else too. She didn’t like how the interruption made her feel. Like something had been briefly taken out of her hands. The rest of the conversation felt slightly off. Not broken. Just… adjusted. Until later. When they walked out together. The evening air was softer than usual. Quiet streets. Slower footsteps. They walked closer this time. Without thinking about it. “You were different earlier,” Keira said softly. Ziven didn’t respond immediately. “Was I?” he asked. “Yes.” A pause. He exhaled slowly. “I don’t like being reminded that people can step into things I thought were… ours.” That word. Ours. It landed differently. Neither of them corrected it. Keira’s chest tightened slightly. But she didn’t speak. They stopped walking without noticing. Facing each other now. Too close. Not planned. Just… natural. The silence between them wasn’t empty anymore. It felt full. Heavy. Charged. Keira looked up at him. And Ziven didn’t look away. Not this time. It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t loud. It just… happened. A small movement. A shift forward. Not intentional. Not fully controlled. Their lips brushed briefly Just a moment. Barely there. But neither of them pulled away immediately. It lasted longer than it should have. Not because it was planned. But because neither of them reacted fast enough to end it. When they finally moved apart— it wasn’t dramatic. Just quiet. Awareness replacing stillness. Keira blinked softly. Her breath slightly uneven. Not from excitement. From surprise. From realization. Ziven didn’t speak immediately. Just looked at her. Like he was trying to understand what just changed. “I—” Keira started. Then stopped. Ziven nodded slightly. “I know.” Silence. Different now. Not comfortable. Not uncomfortable. Just… new. And then— a notification sound broke it. Keira’s phone buzzed. A reminder. A message from home. Reality returning. The moment shifted instantly. Whatever had almost formed— was now interrupted. Not ended. Just paused. “I should go,” Keira said softly. Ziven nodded. But his eyes stayed on her a second longer than usual. “Yeah,” he said quietly. No one moved right away. Not because they were unsure. But because something had just become harder to ignore. And neither of them knew what to do with that yet.
