Chapter 6

Hybrid. The word should have stung, but instead it felt like coming home. The alley walls pulsed with bioluminescent veins as we ran, the light responding to our presence-or perhaps to my emotions, which were cascading through me like a storm. I realised I could sense the guards' positions without looking back, their presence like bright spots in my awareness. "They're splitting up," I told Costa, tugging him down a side passage that twisted at an impossible angle. "Trying to cut us off at the next junction." Costa's markings flashed with surprise. "How can you—" "I don't know," I admitted, the pendant now burning against my skin. "But I can feel them. I can feel everything." The alley opened suddenly into a small courtyard dominated by what appeared to be the remains of an ancient fountain. Its crystal basin was cracked, but water still flowed through it, defying conventional physics to spiral upward before cascading down in musical droplets. "The Nexus," Costa breathed, recognition lighting his features. "It's changed, but this is it." I approached the fountain, drawn by something I couldn't name. The water seemed to sing as I neared it, each droplet containing harmonics that resonated with something deep inside me. When I dipped my fingers into the flow, the liquid clung to my skin, forming patterns of light that matched Costa's markings. "The ritual was interrupted here," I said, memories flooding back. "They dragged us apart just as we entered the final phase." Costa joined me at the fountain's edge, his hand finding mine in the luminous water. "They feared what we would become if we completed it." "And what was that, exactly?" I asked, though part of me already knew the answer. "Something new," he said simply. "A bridge between worlds that couldn't be undone." The pendant pulsed in time with the fountain's flow now, and I realised they were synchronising—creating a resonance that made the very air vibrate around us. The golden thread connecting us grew brighter, more substantial. "Costa," I whispered, "I think it's happening anyway. The binding—it's trying to complete itself." His eyes widened as he felt it too—the pull between us strengthening, the barriers of six centuries beginning to dissolve. "They can't stop it this time," he said, his voice filled with wonder and determination. "Not if we don't let them." A shout from the alley entrance shattered the moment. Four guards burst into the courtyard, their weapons raised. "Step away from the fountain!" the leader commanded, his markings pulsing with authority. "By order of Lord Vexan, you are to be returned to stasis immediately!" Costa moved to shield me, but I stepped forward instead, something ancient and powerful rising within me. The water from the fountain seemed to follow my movement, droplets hovering in the air around us. "No, go f**k yourself," I said, my voice carrying harmonics I'd never heard before. "We will not live by your rules anymore.” The guard's markings flashed with shock at my defiance, but his weapon remained steady. "This isn't a negotiation, hybrid. Lord Vexan has declared both of you dangerous anomalies. The Council has authorised immediate containment." Behind him, his three companions spread out to surround the fountain. I could feel their uncertainty—they'd been told to capture us, not to understand what we were becoming. The water droplets continued to hover around me, responding to emotions I barely recognised as my own. "Six hundred years," Costa said, his voice carrying the weight of royal authority despite our circumstances. "Six hundred years you've kept us apart, frozen in time while the world changed around us. And for what? Fear?" "For the protection of both species," the lead guard insisted, though I sensed hesitation beneath his words. "The binding ritual you attempted was untested and dangerous. It could have—" "Could have what?" I interrupted, feeling power surge through me with each word. "Could you have proven that your precious separation was unnecessary? That humans and Novans were meant to evolve together?" The pendant at my throat pulsed brighter, and I felt something shift inside me—a barrier breaking down that had been artificially maintained for centuries. My skin began to shimmer with a subtle iridescence that mirrored Costa's markings. One of the guards gasped. "Her transformation is accelerating. We need to act now!" The leader raised his weapon higher, its barrel glowing with contained energy. "Final warning. Step away from the fountain and surrender peacefully." Costa's hand found mine in the glowing water, and the fountain erupted when our fingers intertwined. Water shot upward in a spiralling column, encasing us in a translucent barrier that hummed with ancient power. I could see the guards firing their weapons through it, but the energy blasts dissipated harmlessly against our watery shield. "Ariella," Costa whispered, his voice filled with awe. "Your eyes..." I couldn't see what he saw, but I could feel the change—my vision expanding beyond normal human perception, colours deepening into spectrums I'd never known existed. The world around me became a tapestry of connections and possibilities, and at its centre stood Costa, bound to me by threads of light that were growing stronger by the second. "I remember everything now," I said, memories cascading through me like the fountain's water. "My mother was one of the first hybrids, hidden among humans for her protection. She knew what I would become someday. That's why she arranged for me to meet you." "The fortune teller," Costa nodded, understanding dawning. "She was working with your mother all along." The water column around us began to pulse with our heartbeats, which were synchronising with each other. I could feel Costa's thoughts brushing against mine, tentative at first, then growing stronger as ancient barriers dissolved. Outside our sanctuary, more guards were arriving. Through the water, I could see Lord Vexan himself striding into the courtyard, his elaborate robes marking him as one of the Inner Circle. His markings pulsed with deep crimson—a colour I now understood meant rage mixed with fear.
