HIS FORTUNE, HER FIRE Chapter One: The Man in the Black Car Maya Bennett knew trouble when it arrived. It usually came in the form of unpaid bills, broken pipes, angry suppliers, or a phone call from the bank. Today, it came in the form of a black luxury car. She stood behind the front desk of Bennett House and watched through the tall glass windows as the sleek vehicle rolled slowly to a stop outside. Her stomach tightened. “That car costs more than this entire building,” Noah said from beside her. Maya glanced at him. “You always know exactly what to say to make me feel better.” “I’m a lawyer. It’s one of my many gifts.” She tried to smile, but her eyes returned to the car. Bennett House was old, beautiful, and far from perfect. The three-story boutique hotel had belonged to Maya's family for more than forty years. Her father had loved the place with every part of his heart. After he died, Maya had made him a promise. She would protect it. No matter what it took. The driver's door opened first. Then the back door. And the man who stepped out made Maya forget, for one brief and deeply irritating second, how to breathe. He was tall. That was her first thought. Her second was that he looked completely out of place standing in front of Bennett House. His dark suit was perfectly tailored. His hair was neatly styled, and his expression was so calm that Maya immediately distrusted him. No one who looked that confident ever arrived with good news. “Who is that?” Noah asked quietly. Maya shook her head. “I don't know.” The front door opened. A bell above it chimed softly. The man stepped inside. His eyes moved across the lobby, taking in the wooden floors, the old staircase, and the photographs that covered the walls. Maya hated the way he looked at everything. As if he were measuring it. Calculating it. Deciding what it was worth. “Can I help you?” she asked. His gaze settled on her. And stayed there. Maya lifted an eyebrow. “Well?” The corner of his mouth moved slightly. “Are you Maya Bennett?” “Yes.” “My name is Adrian Cole.” Noah stopped moving. Maya looked from Adrian to Noah. “What?” Noah leaned closer and whispered, “Cole Holdings.” Maya's expression changed. She knew the name. Everyone in the city knew the name. Cole Holdings owned hotels, office buildings, luxury apartments, and half the companies people walked into every day without even realizing who stood behind them. And Adrian Cole? Adrian Cole was the billionaire who had built one of the largest business empires in the country. Maya folded her arms. “What does Cole Holdings want with me?” Adrian's expression did not change. “I'd like to discuss Bennett House.” Her heart immediately began beating faster. “No.” One of his eyebrows rose. “We haven't discussed anything yet.” “We don't need to.” “Maya—” “No.” Noah moved slightly beside her, clearly prepared to stop the conversation if necessary. Adrian looked between them. Then he returned his attention to Maya. “You know your financial situation is becoming difficult.” Her face went cold. “How do you know anything about my financial situation?” “I make it my business to know about properties in which my company has an interest.” “This is not a property.” His eyes remained on hers. “It's a hotel.” “It's my home.” For the first time, something changed in Adrian's expression. Only slightly. But Maya noticed. She had learned a long time ago that powerful people rarely showed their emotions. You had to look for the smallest cracks. “This place means something to you,” he said. “Yes.” “Then perhaps you should listen to what I have to say.” Maya walked out from behind the desk. She stopped directly in front of him. Adrian was even taller than she had expected. She hated that she noticed. “I already know what you're going to say.” “Do you?” “You want to buy Bennett House.” His silence answered her. Maya laughed once. It wasn't a happy sound. “Of course.” “Maya—” “Let me guess. You'll offer me a generous amount of money. More money than I could ever make here. You'll tell me I should be practical.” Adrian watched her carefully. “And then?” “You'll turn this place into another luxury hotel.” “That is one possibility.” “Possibility?” “I haven't made a final decision.” “Then let me make one for you.” Maya stepped closer. “Bennett House is not for sale.” The lobby became silent. Noah looked at Adrian. Adrian looked at Maya. And Maya refused to look away. Finally, Adrian spoke. “Everything has a price.” Maya felt something hot rise inside her. Anger. The familiar fire that had carried her through every impossible day since her father died. “No,” she said quietly. Adrian's eyes narrowed. “No?” “No, Mr. Cole. Everything does not have a price.” For the first time, his calm expression disappeared. Only for a second. But Maya saw it. And strangely, she smiled. Adrian Cole might have more money than she could imagine. He might own buildings taller than anything Bennett House could ever become. He might be powerful enough to buy almost anything he wanted. But not this. Not her father's dream. Not her home. Adrian reached into his jacket and removed a business card. He placed it on the front desk. “When you change your mind,” he said, “call me.” Maya looked down at the card. Then back at him. “I won't.” A slow smile appeared on Adrian's face. It was the most dangerous thing Maya had ever seen. “We'll see.” He turned and walked toward the door. Maya watched him leave. The black car waited outside. A few moments later, it disappeared down the street. Noah let out a long breath. “You realize who you just argued with?” Maya looked at Adrian's business card. Then she picked it up. “I don't care who he is.” Noah looked at her. “Maya.” She stared at the card for another moment. Then, with a determined movement, she dropped it into the nearest drawer. “He wants Bennett House,” she said. Noah nodded. “Yes.” Maya closed the drawer. “Then he picked the wrong woman.” But upstairs, hidden inside a brown envelope beneath a stack of unpaid invoices, was a letter Maya had been trying desperately to ignore. The bank wanted their money. And they wanted it soon. Maya looked toward the window. The black car was gone. But somehow, she knew Adrian Cole would be back. And next time, the battle would be even harder. She had no idea that the man she had just promised to fight would one day become the greatest danger to her heart. Or that his fortune would mean nothing compared to the fire he was about to awaken inside her.
