Chapter 14

Bryan had reserved a table at the city's finest restaurant. It was intimate. Candlelit. Private. A corner booth overlooking the skyline. The kind of place that made you feel like the only two people in the world. Stella sat across from him, forcing a smile. She'd been quiet all evening. Distracted. Her mind kept drifting back to the conference. To Joshua's face. The desperation in his eyes. She didn't want to think about him. She wanted to focus on Bryan. On this perfect dinner. On the man who had never hurt her. But she couldn't stop the thoughts from creeping in. *** Bryan reached across the table and took her hand. "You're quiet tonight." Stella blinked. "I'm sorry. I'm just tired." "It's not just the conference, is it?" She looked down at their intertwined fingers. She didn't know what to say. She didn't want to lie to him. But she didn't want to talk about Joshua either. "It's been a long day," she said finally. Bryan studied her face. He was quiet for a moment. Then he squeezed her hand. "You know you can tell me anything, right? I won't judge you. I won't get angry. I just want to understand." Stella felt tears prick at her eyes. She blinked them away. "He shook me," she admitted. "Seeing him. Hearing his voice. I thought I was over him. I thought I'd moved on. But when he showed up, it all came flooding back." Bryan nodded slowly. "I understand." "I'm sorry," she said quickly. "I know this isn't what you wanted to hear tonight." "Hey." He tilted her chin up. "I didn't ask you to be my girlfriend so you could pretend everything is perfect. I asked you because I want to be with you. All of you. Even the messy parts." Stella's throat tightened. "You're too good to me." "I'm exactly as good as you deserve." He smiled. "Now finish your wine. I have a surprise for you after dinner." She laughed. It was a small laugh, but genuine. "What kind of surprise?" "You'll see." He winked. "Finish your wine." *** Stella spent the next hour trying to relax. Bryan told her about his week. About Lily's school play. About a new project he was working on. He made her laugh. He made her forget. By the time the dessert arrived, she felt lighter. "This is beautiful," she said, gesturing around the restaurant. "Thank you for tonight." "Thank you for being here." He smiled. "I know it's not easy. I know you're still healing. But I'm grateful you're giving me a chance." She reached across the table and took his hand. "I'm grateful too." The waiter arrived with a small velvet box. Stella's heart stopped. "Bryan, what" "It's not what you think." He laughed. "I promise. It's just a small thing. I saw it and thought of you." He pushed the box across the table. She opened it with trembling fingers. Inside was a delicate silver necklace. A small star pendant hung from the chain. Simple. Elegant. Beautiful. "It's a star," Bryan said softly. "Because you shine so bright. Even when you don't see it yourself." Stella stared at the necklace. Her eyes filled with tears. "Bryan, I don't know what to say." "Say you'll wear it." He smiled. "And when you look at it, remember that you're not alone. That I'm here. That you're exactly where you're supposed to be." She pulled the necklace out of the box. He took it from her and motioned for her to turn around. She turned. He fastened the clasp gently around her neck. She reached up and touched the pendant. It was warm. Comforting. A reminder. "I love it," she whispered. "I love you, Stella." The words hung in the air. Stella's breath caught. She turned to face him. His eyes were warm. Honest. "I know it's fast," he said. "I know you're not ready to hear that. But I needed you to know how I feel. I love you. And I'm going to spend every day proving it to you." Stella didn't know what to say. Her heart was pounding. Her mind was spinning. She leaned forward and kissed him. Soft. Tender. When she pulled away, she was smiling. "I'm not ready to say it yet," she said softly. "But I'm getting there." Bryan smiled. "That's all I need to hear." *** Across the city, Joshua sat in his apartment, staring at the wall. He'd been there for hours. He hadn't moved. He hadn't eaten. He hadn't slept. He kept replaying the conference in his mind. Stella's cold eyes. Her sharp voice. The way she'd looked at him like he was nothing. She'd moved on. She was happy. With someone else. And he was alone. His phone buzzed on the coffee table. His investigator, again. Joshua picked it up and stared at the screen. He didn't want to talk to anyone. He didn't want to hear about the fingerprint or the shell company. He didn't care anymore. He typed back: I told you. I'm done. He threw the phone on the couch and walked to the window. The city glittered below him. Beautiful. Indifferent. He'd lost everything. His wife. His children. His chance at happiness. And he had no one to blame but himself. *** Back at the penthouse, Stella couldn't sleep. She lay in bed, her fingers tracing the star pendant around her neck. She thought about Bryan's words. I love you, Stella. She felt the same way. She knew she did. But she was still scared. Terrified, actually. She'd trusted someone completely before, and he'd destroyed her. What if Bryan did the same thing? What if he eventually saw her as ordinary too? She pushed the thought away. Bryan wasn't Joshua. Bryan was kind. Patient. Understanding. She turned on her side and closed her eyes. She would trust him. She would let herself love him. But the fear was still there. Lingering. Waiting.
