Chapter 8

1103 Words
Stella Hayes stood in the lobby of The Celeste, her heart pounding. She'd been here a thousand times. This was her hotel. Her empire. But tonight felt different. Tonight, she wasn't the Ice Queen. She was just Stella. A woman on a date. She smoothed down her red dress. Elegant. Simple. She wanted to look beautiful. Confident. Like a woman who had moved on. Because she had moved on. Six years without Joshua. Three children. A billion-dollar empire. But she was still lonely. The longing for someone to come home to. The desire to be held. The need to be seen. Maybe Bryan could be that person. "Stella." She turned. Bryan Taylor stood at the entrance to the private dining room. Charcoal suit. Sandy brown hair slightly tousled. His smile was warm. Genuine. "You look beautiful," he said. Stella felt heat rise to her cheeks. "Thank you. You look handsome too." He stepped closer. "I've been looking forward to this all week." "Me too." He extended his hand. "Shall we?" She took it. His fingers were warm. Strong. She felt something shift inside her. Something she hadn't felt in years. Hope. *** The private balcony overlooked the city. Lights glittered below like scattered diamonds. A table for two. White linen. A single candle flickering in the breeze. Bryan pulled out her chair. "I wanted somewhere private. Somewhere we could talk." Stella sat down. "It's perfect." He sat across from her, his eyes never leaving her face. "I was nervous about tonight." She laughed. "You? Nervous?" "Terrified." He smiled. "I've never met anyone like you. I didn't want to mess this up." "You're very honest." "I prefer honesty. Life's too short for games." She looked at him. Kind eyes. Genuine smile. He wasn't trying to impress her. He was just being himself. And that was enough. *** Dinner was easy. The conversation flowed. Bryan told her about his company. Starting it in his dorm room. Building it into a tech empire. Never forgetting where he came from. "I grew up with nothing. My parents worked two jobs each. I know what it's like to struggle." Stella nodded. "I know that feeling too." He looked at her. "I know you do." She blinked. "What do you mean?" "I did some research. After the gala. I wanted to know more about you. Your business. Your success. I found articles about your hotel group. They mentioned you were divorced. That's all." Stella relaxed slightly. "That's all anyone knows." "That's all I need to know." His voice was soft. "I don't need to know your past. I just need to know you. The woman sitting in front of me. That's enough." She stared at him. No one had ever said that to her. He wasn't prying. He wasn't demanding. He was just... seeing her. "You built an empire," he continued. "You raised three children. You became a woman who doesn't take anything from anyone. That's incredible, Stella." She felt tears prick at her eyes. "Thank you." "I'm not saying this to flatter you. I'm saying it because it's true. I see you. The real you. Not the Ice Queen. Not the billionaire. Just Stella." She didn't know what to say. So she just looked at him. And for the first time in six years, she felt seen. *** The evening passed too quickly. They talked for hours. Childhoods. Dreams. Fears. Bryan told her about his parents, who had passed away. About his sister, who he was raising his niece for. "Lily's parents were killed in a car accident. I took her in. She's the only family I have left." Stella's heart broke. "I'm so sorry." "It was hard at first. I didn't know how to be a father. But I learned. Now I can't imagine my life without her." She reached across the table and took his hand. "You're a good man, Bryan." "I try to be." He smiled. "It's not always easy." "That's all any of us can do." His fingers intertwined with hers. "Stella, I know you've been hurt. I know you've built walls. But I want you to know I'm not going anywhere. I'm not going to hurt you. I'm not going to make you feel small. I'm just going to be here. For as long as you'll let me." Her eyes glistened. "I don't know what to say." "Don't say anything. Just be here. With me." She smiled. "I can do that." *** Across the city, Joshua Sterling sat in his penthouse, staring at his phone. He'd been trying to reach Stella for days. Blocked. Ignored. She'd made it clear she wanted nothing to do with him. But he couldn't give up. Not when he knew the truth. Not when he knew she'd been framed. His investigator was working on the case. But it would take time. And while he waited, Stella was slipping away. His phone buzzed. A message. Sir, Stella Hayes is at The Celeste tonight. Dinner with Bryan Taylor. Private balcony. Top floor. Joshua's blood ran cold. She was with him. On a date. At her hotel. With the man taking his place. He stood up abruptly. Grabbed his jacket. Then he stopped. What was he doing? He couldn't barge in on her date. Demand she leave. Force her to talk to him. He'd already hurt her enough. Joshua sank back into his chair. His hands shook. He had to let her go. Let her be happy. Even if it killed him. He typed a message to his investigator. Don't disturb them. Just watch. Report back. He set down the phone and stared at the ceiling. She was with someone else. Someone who made her smile. Someone who was everything he'd never been. And he had to let her go. But he couldn't. Not completely. Not yet. He would find out who framed her. Expose the truth. Prove he had changed. Then maybe she'd give him a second chance. *** At The Celeste, Stella laughed at something Bryan said. She couldn't remember the last time she'd laughed like this. Freely. Openly. Bryan made her feel safe. Seen. Like she was enough. She looked at him across the table. Candlelight flickered in his eyes. He was watching her with such warmth. Such tenderness. Her heart swelled. She didn't know what the future held. She didn't know if this would last. But tonight, she was happy. Hopeful. Exactly where she wanted to be. Bryan raised his glass. "To new beginnings." Stella raised hers. "To new beginnings." The glass clinked. She smiled. For the first time in six years, Stella Hayes was truly happy.
