Yesterday, after the last function of the season—a luncheon at a winery—Phoebe had taken her for coffee in Prahran. Ginny had protested it was a long way for coffee, but Phoebe insisted there was nowhere closer. They journeyed much of the hour in silence, Phoebe concentrating on the road and Ginny drifting through a stream of incidental thoughts. When Phoebe crawled down Chapel Street looking for a place to park, Ginny realised they had spoken so little that she began to worry she had committed some inadvertent transgression at the winery and Phoebe was saving her remonstrations for a stationary moment, a worry she quickly dismissed as paranoid.
