Matthew stood in the middle of his office, the silence pressing in again, heavier now that Sophie had gone. Her words still lingered, circling, refusing to settle into anything manageable. Pregnant. The word did not sit quietly. It scraped against everything else in his head, colliding with thoughts he had been trying to keep separate.
