VALERIE
I gasped in awe at the sight of what was to be my new office. While a bit small, it made up for that shortcoming with the luxury furniture and decorations it had.
“Oh my freaking goodness.” I mouthed, aware that the boss's office was right beside mine, a thick wall of blurry glass separating us so that you could only see blurry silhouettes of others and I was pretty sure he would hear me if I screamed.
“This is life.” I sighed dreamily, running my hands along my smooth glass table, making a not so subtle twirl.
I set down the files Jason gave me, a big smile on my face as I sat down in the plush chair, remembering our encounter.
My boss was so hot, maybe not the hottest I had ever seen - I was definitely not thinking about driver stranger here - but my boss definitely looked hot as well.
I cringed in embarrassment at the constant blush I had on my face while I was with him. I was not the type to blush so hard on a normal day but, I just could not help myself.
Hot boss, kind and cheerful.
I snorted, wondering what Stella would have to say about that when I told her. She would probably tell me to forget my driver stranger and work my charms on my boss.
As if.
I was there to work and that was that. My life was not a Hollywood Romcom, not even close.
I had not even settled down fully in my office when a very loud shrill almost gave me a heart attack.
I jumped, glaring at the rich brown telephone on my table and sighed.
“Well, get out of your head, Valerie. Work has officially started and you are to be a stuck up, professional secretary to the CEO.” I muttered before snatching up the phone.
Then, with a big smile plastered on my face, I answered, “Hello, this is the LA Empire. How may I help you?”
“Give Jason the phone.” A sultry, maybe too sultry female voice snapped and I frowned, staring at the telephone for a second before putting it back to my ear.
“Sorry?” I asked, maybe I heard wrong.
“I said give Jason the phone!” came that voice, again.
I wondered if this was one of those personal calls, since I did not know if my boss told literally everyone to call him by his name. He did tell me to do just that and I was just his secretary.
“Uhm!” I said, mustering all the politeness I had in me, before asking, “I am sorry, who are you?” Then I rushed to add on a second thought, “So I can inform him.”
Maybe she was his girlfriend.
“Tell him it is Victoria Gavriel on the line, girl, and stop wasting my time.” She snapped again and I rolled my eyes.
“Bitch.” I mumbled. Calling Jason's office.
“What?!” Miss Victoria shrieked and I winced.
“Itch! My nose itches me so badly.” I rushed to answer with a nervous chuckle. “Please hold on,” I said to her as Jason got connected.
“Hello, Mr Ford --”
“Jason...”
“Jason,” I stumbled, feeling all weird calling the richest, biggest lawyer in the country who also happened to be my boss by his first name. “A Victoria Gavriel wishes to speak with you?”
My boss answered with a long-suffering sigh. “Oh god.”
I almost snickered. What? Was she his ex or maybe a lover?
“Should I connect her with you, Sir?” I asked.
Another sigh, then a groan, then, “Yes please. Thank you, Valerie.”
“Alright.” I said before redirecting the whiny lover’s call to him. “Here you go ma'am.” I said with a smile.
“About f*****g time.” She sneered.
A snort came out of my lips before I could stop it, “Bitch.” I mumbled again.
Before her shrill sounded across the phone, I quickly sent the call to Jason and ended it on my side.
“Well, hopefully I have not gotten myself fired by calling my boss's girlfriend a bitch.” I muttered and turned to read the schedule format I was given.
After a few, silent minutes, Jason walked out of his office buttoning his suit before turning to look at me.
I jumped from my chair, my heart in my mouth. Had he really come to fire me??? On my first day of work??
“I have to be somewhere right now, please do not hesitate to take a message from any important client that calls,” he informed me.
My heart calmed a bit and I managed a shaky nod, “Yes, sir.”
So he was not firing me yet.
He walked a few feet towards the elevator before turning to me. “Feel free to reject any calls from Miss Victoria Gavriel.” Then, he walked into the elevator.
I slumped into my chair with a grin.
JASON
I walked into the gleaming office of my best friend without knocking. Only by instinct and years of practice, did I manage not to get my ear sliced off by the sharp dagger that was sent my way as soon as I stepped foot into the office.
“Paranoid much, Kayden?” I chuckled, sitting myself in front of his desk.
”You are a death-seeking bastard, Jason.” He growled low from his chair across his table.
I took a look at the office, furnished with the darkest black and rich brown colours, a very subtle luxury that was killed by the amount of weapons hung on the walls - guns, knives, daggers, even deadly little scissors. I did not want to know what my friend did with the latter especially.
The dim light in the office, instead of softening the otherwise dangerous look, only added to the mystery and misery of whoever was brought here to receive punishment.
Kayden's chair sat in the darkest corner of the office, his face in dark shadow.
This was where my friend ran his OTHER business, the less friendly, gruesome and utterly bloody business that required him to have a law firm so that he would be able to manipulate his own laws and escape the government.
Clever bastard.
“No, I am just a bastard who loves seeing your face too much.” I countered, pushing my legs on the table.
“You are going to lose that leg in three seconds.”
I quickly brought down my legs. I rather love them very much, thank you.
“You do not have to be so moody and dangerous all the time, you know.” I teased.
“Get to the point, Jason.”
“Crazy mafia bastard.”
My demented friend grinned.
“So, Victoria called me.”
Only a groan let me know that he heard me.
“She said you ran off five minutes into your date. Care to explain that, Kayden?”
“There are lots of ways a man can die, Jason.” He started.
I rolled my eyes. Here we go.
"I refuse to be talked to death,” he muttered, and I sighed.
“You keep running away every damn time you meet up for a date. Are you sure you are the mafia boss the whole world is terrified of?” I asked.
“If you are not sure who I am anymore, feel free to wait for me in the dungeons, I will happily show you why I am the most dangerous mafia lord.” He said softly, too softly.
Dangerous.
“Fine, I am sorry. She called me this morning saying she would love to come into the company someday, you know, see what she is investing her fortune in.”
Kayden snorted in reply.
“She is coming in two weeks. I do not need to tell you that you would be the CEO for that day, right?”
A growl.
I sighed. “Come on Kayden, we need her damn money and she wants you. Just have s*x with her and send her on her way.”
