VALERIE's POV
“I am not going to work in a hot pink mini skirt, Stella.” I deadpanned, watching my best friend frown at the extremely short, slutty hot pink skirt that screamed DUMB and BIMBO.
I folded my arms across my chest, watching her, waiting.
She looked up, no doubt about to preach to me the goodness of mini skirts.
“No.” I cut in before she even started, “no f*****g way Stella.”
“This looks so good though and it is going to make your legs so sexy!” Stella pouted, pushing the skirt into my arms. “Your boss is going to go crazy seeing you in this.”
With a long-suffering sigh, I explained to her in a way you would explain to a five-year-old that Santa does not really exist. “I am to resume work as the CEO’s secretary in THE law firm, Stella, not a modeling agency,” I threw the skirt on my bed, dismissing that idea entirely. ‘If I need them to take me seriously, a hot pink mini will not cut it.”
I walked towards my closet, ignoring Stella, who watched my mini with longing.
Weirdo. That was what she was.
Sometimes I wondered how I ever became friends with her and why I invited her over to LA for the weekend. Well, I missed her, that was why, but, that was not the point.
We were both crazy and weird and we had clicked so well since high school. But, it seems I grew up a bit along the way. I wanted to take care of my dad, I wanted him to get some rest, and yes, I really wanted to be independent. My dad wasn't exactly rich, but he could provide all I needed and I knew he was always busy anytime he was not trying to be a father.
And I was a bit vain, but, who does not love luxury?
That was not the point though. I wanted to make good cash and it would not hurt to make that good cash in the most coveted law firm in the country.
“Well, come on, stop pouting and help me find something appropriate for a law firm, miss.” I said with a smile. I loved my best friend and wished that crazy light and swagger would never fade.
She shrugged and turned to me beaming. “Since you begged and cried so hard, I will help you.”
I fought so hard not to roll my eyes as she sashayed past me.
Together, we were a tornado in my closet, throwing things all around. All was peaceful and quiet in that therapeutic storm, till—
“So…” Stella started with a mischievous grin and I could not stifle my groan as I halted in the process of snatching up a denim jacket.
“I heard you last night.” She said, wriggling her eyebrows, that annoying smile growing every second.
I had already packed into my apartment and invited my friends to sleepover but Cole -for reasons best known to him, could not make it, leaving me alone with the goofhead smiling at me.
Then her words registered in my head and I blushed a very deep, unflattering beetroot red.
Oh my gods, I hope—
“Ohhhh, f**k! Please….” My best friend mimicked in a very breathy, annoying, whiny tone and, as if it was possible, I wanted to enter the earth.
Of course, I knew what she was going on and on about. I could not help myself last night. I did not know what to blame it on -my hormones, excitement, anxiousness, whatever- but, I gave in to my body’s wants and touched myself to images of that sexy as hell driver in my head.
And apparently, Stella heard it all.
I looked upwards to heaven. Can I die now, please??
“Shut up!” I mumbled, chucking my jacket at her head. I hoped it would smack her hard in her laughing face.
She dodged it easily. “Tell me Valerie, were you doing the deed to the thoughts of your driver?” Then, she made an incredulous face, eyes dancing with laughter and gave a fake gasp, feigning horror. “Or, was it about thoughts of me?!”
Ignoring the hotness in my cheeks, I rolled my eyes. “As pretty as I am sure you think you are, I do not swing that way, Stella, nor do you,” I glared at her, hands on my hips. “How do you even come up with these thoughts??”
She shrugged, “Raw talent, Valerie, raw talent.”
She sighed dreamily, swaying slightly “I wish I would also meet a gorgeous, sexy hunk of a man that would sweep me off my feet.”
“I met him briefly, Stella, I do not remember telling you that he was a hunk of a man.” I gently elbowed her out of my way, staring at my blouse collection. “I am also pretty sure he did not sweep me off my feet.”
I shrugged. “How could he?” Then, I turned to glare at her, “We were sitting and it has been three months, I do not even remember what he looks like.”
A very harmless lie.
She opened her mouth to argue.
“And that is it.” I held up a hand.
“But—“
“That is it.” I ended the conversation.
“Killjoy.” She mumbled and returned to the task of raiding my closet. She snickered at the thought of the most embarrassing thing she had witnessed about me.
Wisely, I also bit my lips, turning my attention to destroying my closet.
It had been almost a week since that incident and try as I might, I could not forget how those gorgeous blue eyes stripped me bare from the rear mirror, or how his deep baritone washed over my body like a soft, intent caress.
I turned my back to Stella so she would not see my burning face, as I tried so hard not to think about how the dangerous aura around him did not make me run about, instead I thought more about the lines of jumping his bones, repeatedly.
I groaned inwardly, I was so doomed and I was sure I would never meet that alluring stranger anymore. I mean, what were the odds? In a new and very busy city like mine, meeting that sexy stranger again was highly impossible.
Impossible. IMPOSSIBLE Valerie, I repeated in my head just so I would stop thinking about him.
After a whole minute of peace and silence again, Stella paused to look at me, a thoughtful look entering her face.
I silently wondered where I could bury my best friend in my new backyard.
“Why do you think Cole could not make it yesterday?” She asked, watching me intently.
I shrugged half-heartedly, “He said he was doing something important in school.”
“And you believe him?”
“Of course I do not, maybe it is because school is in California and we are in Los Angeles, but when I made to ask him, I felt him closing up on me.” I checked the baby blue blouse in my hands, trying not to sound as worried as I felt, and trying not to think of the blue eyes that stirred so much desire in me.
I sighed and turned to Stella with a smile, “I am sure he will tell us when he is ready, we will be waiting for him.”
She seemed to think it over and then, after a while, she nodded.
“I am sure he is in a relationship.” She grumbled. “That ass.”
I laughed, shaking my head.
We both turned to face our outfit search seriously and quietly for a while till Stella finally held up a black three-quarter skirt that had a slit in front that reached my mid thigh.
I grinned, lifting my baby blue blouse.
“So, how about this really drab, boring, funeral-attire skirt and that grandmother-looking blue blouse that is so boring that it does not show any cleavage at all?” Stella announced.
My grin widened. "Let us go." I talked to my dress.
I hurried to my bathroom to have a quick shower and get ready to work.
I got to work about five minutes before I could be considered late and i heaved a sigh in relief the moment I alighted from the cab. I curled my sweaty fingers into my palm, a big bright, polite smile on my face as I walked into the huge double glass doors of the LA Empire.
'Let's Get This!'
