Chapter Nine: Back Off

KAYDEN “He did what?” I could not help but raise my voice. Jason, to his merit, winced. “I do not know what to do with that bastard. How dare he file a law suit against that innocent man after killing his wife with fake medication?” That bastard. “Put him on the call,” I growled. Jason obliged, outshining the amused glitter that always danced in his eyes. While he typed in the number and dialed, I looked sideways, to where Jason’s secretary sat. She was not there when I walked in this afternoon. I intentionally came in when the employees would normally go for lunch. But now, her blurry silhouette showed her sitting on her desk, probably working. Jason’s person. I dragged my gaze away from her, not allowing myself note more about her. Jason had laid his claim on her while I was stuck in la la land with mine. I growled. “Here.” Jason said, handing me the phone. “Hello?” Shawn, owner of MedView said, his voice wary. “You are going to drop that lawsuit immediately and you are going to give the accuser 5 million dollars more for even thinking to sue him when you killed his wife and you are going to do all that before 12am today.” I paused, savoring the hitch in his breath. “Or you can forget you ever had a company called MedView and kiss your glutton wife goodbye, I heard she loves to visit Victoria secret as much as she loves to eat.” I ended the call. I turned to my smirking friend. “Wipe that grin off your face.” He just grinned wider. “How do you know she visits Victoria's secret?” “I have my resources.” “Very weird sources you have, Kayden.” I jerked my chin towards the dark, clothed, blurry silhouette and, like magnet to iron, Jason’s eyes went straight to the glass. His gaze softened, the harsh lines around his mouth eased up. Bastard. “So, the secretary?” “Her name is Valerie.” He muttered, not even looking at me. Whatever. “Hopefully she is good at her work and not just a pretty sight for you to stare at and covet.” I could not help it, the jealousy and hence, the bastardized comments. I could not help but be a prick, not when he was obviously falling for the dark silhouette and I was no way close to finding the red-haired girl that dared to mistake me for a driver. I was not in love, far from it actually. I just did not know how I came to be so attracted to someone I met by mistake. “She is probably too good at it.” Jason said, ignoring my taunt. “And you decided this with your head?” Yes, I was a crazy bastard, Jason’s head swung towards me, eyes narrowing in warning. “And not your d**k?” I could not help but add, giving a hateful smirk. “Back the hell off, Kayden.” Jason snarled in my face and for a second, I remembered how dangerous he could also be, how lethal. Still did not hold a candle to me anyways, but it felt good to see him all riled up. “Just saying.” I shrugged.
