Chapter 3: The Love Letter

1137 Words
Jinky’s footsteps echoed through the empty hallway as she made her way to her locker. The school day had been long, each class dragging on in its own tedious way. She could already feel the weight of the homework piling up, but for the moment, she didn’t mind. She was looking forward to the quiet of the library, where she could escape into the world of books and forget about the noise of the real world for a while. She just needed to get her things from her locker, then she could lose herself in her own thoughts. But as she approached her locker, something unusual caught her eye. A small envelope was wedged between the slats of her locker door, almost hidden, as though it had been carefully placed there. Jinky paused, her heart skipping a beat. She knew every inch of her locker, and this was not something she had seen before. She reached out tentatively, her fingers brushing against the smooth paper. It was plain, white, and unmarked—no name, no return address. Just a simple envelope. For a moment, she hesitated. Was it for her? Who could have left it there? With a curious glance around the hallway, Jinky carefully opened the envelope. Her fingers trembled as she slid the paper out, unfolding it to reveal the contents. It was a letter, written in neat handwriting, almost elegant in its precision. Her heart fluttered in her chest as she read the words: Dearest Jinky, I don’t know how to say this, but I can’t keep it to myself any longer. I’ve watched you for some time now, from afar. You might not have noticed me, but I’ve seen the way your eyes light up when you talk about the things you love, the way you smile when you’re lost in thought. You have a kind of quiet beauty that draws me in. I’ve admired you for who you are, not the person others think you should be. I know this might seem strange, and maybe you’ll laugh or roll your eyes when you read this. But I had to tell you. I couldn’t keep my feelings hidden anymore. You deserve to know that someone sees you for who you truly are. I hope you don’t think less of me for writing this, but I needed you to know that I care. Yours, Your Secret Admirer Jinky’s breath caught in her throat as she finished reading. Her hands were shaking, and for a moment, she had to steady herself against the locker. The words seemed to swim before her eyes, her mind struggling to process what she had just read. Was this real? Was this some kind of joke? She glanced at the envelope again, looking for any clue, any hint as to who this might be from. But there was nothing. No signature. No name. Just the same neat handwriting. Her thoughts spun in a thousand directions, but one question kept coming back: Who was this? A sudden wave of warmth spread through her chest, quickly followed by a rush of confusion. She had always felt invisible, always overlooked. Yet here was someone, someone who saw her. Someone who admired her, not for the things others admired her for, but for who she really was. The thought was both exhilarating and terrifying. She stuffed the letter back into the envelope, her mind racing as she closed her locker door. The hallway was empty now, the last bell having rung a few minutes ago. But she wasn’t ready to go home—not yet. Not with her mind buzzing, not with the weight of the letter pressing down on her. Jinky walked aimlessly, not sure where she was headed. She found herself near the library, but she didn’t feel like going inside just yet. The quiet comfort of the library seemed distant now, replaced by a whirlwind of thoughts she couldn’t control. She needed to talk to someone. She needed answers. As if on instinct, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, relieved to see a message from Lily. Lily: Hey, you’re not going to believe what just happened. You remember Roniel, right? Well, I heard that he’s been asking around about you. I think he’s interested. Just thought I’d let you know! Jinky’s heart skipped a beat at the mention of Roniel’s name. She had been so focused on the letter that she had forgotten about him. The mysterious new guy who had caught her attention. The guy who was quiet, composed, and completely different from anyone she had ever met. The guy who had looked at her with those unreadable eyes. Could it be him? The thought sent a jolt of panic through her. What if this letter was from Roniel? What if he had been watching her in the same way she had been watching him? It seemed too much to be true, too much to hope for. But then, why would someone else be asking about her? Was it a coincidence? She stared at her phone, the message from Lily sitting unanswered. Her mind raced through every possible scenario. Maybe it wasn’t from Roniel. Maybe it was from someone else, someone who had noticed her in ways she hadn’t realized. But why not tell her who they were? Why keep it a secret? Jinky sighed, leaning against the wall as she tried to clear her thoughts. She wasn’t sure what to make of it. The idea of someone liking her, someone actually paying attention to her, felt both exhilarating and terrifying. She wasn’t used to this kind of attention. She had spent so much time hiding behind her books, behind the safety of her own world, that the idea of stepping out of it felt foreign. But as she thought about the letter again, something in her chest stirred. She couldn’t ignore it. She couldn’t just let it slip away. Whoever this was, they had taken the time to write to her, to express feelings that she had never imagined anyone would have for her. That alone made it worth considering. It made her feel... important. She tucked her phone back into her pocket and took a deep breath, trying to calm the butterflies that had taken flight in her stomach. She needed to talk to someone—someone who could help her make sense of all of this. But for now, the only thing she could do was keep the letter close, hidden away like a precious secret. She couldn’t bring herself to throw it away or tell anyone else about it. Not yet. The mystery of it was too much to let go. And deep down, Jinky knew that, somehow, this was the start of something big—something that might just change everything.
