CH 12: Celestial Game Hunt

**Chapter 12: A Deal in the Mist** The moon was a silver coin hanging over the city, veiled behind a thin curtain of clouds. Yuuto moved silently through the narrow alleyway, the Celestial App dim but pulsing in his pocket. The feather he had collected from the last trial now emitted a faint warmth, like a heartbeat. Each step he took brought him closer to something he could feel but not yet name. He had received a new notification just an hour ago: [Urgent Mission: Rendezvous with the Gray Merchant at the Whispering Docks before midnight. Rewards: Unknown. Warning: High-Risk Encounter.] No coordinates. Just a riddle and a clock. But Yuuto knew the docks. Everyone did. They were cursed ground now—long abandoned, shrouded in fog that never lifted. He wasn’t even sure boats still passed through there. He arrived just as the broken bell tower struck midnight. The mist clung to his skin like breath. Shapes twisted within it, but none took form. Then he saw him. A figure in gray stood near the edge of the docks, face hidden beneath a hood. The Gray Merchant. "You’re late," the voice was gravel, ancient and bitter. "I came as fast as I could," Yuuto replied, his fingers wrapped tightly around the feather. The Merchant chuckled. "You wear that feather like a talisman, but you don’t know what it cost. Not yet." Yuuto stepped forward, cautious. "The app sent me. Why am I here?" "Because you touched the path of the Hunt. That makes you one of them. One of us." The figure turned, revealing a mask carved like a fox's face. "But there is more to this than mere quests and levels. The gods are not idle, Yuuto Kamizaki. They wager." "Wager?" "On mortals like you. On who will fall. Who will rise. Every choice you make shifts the balance. I am here to offer you a deal." Yuuto felt a twinge of unease. "What kind of deal?" The Merchant extended a gloved hand. In his palm rested a single card, glowing with golden symbols. It was blank. "A Celestial Pact. You take this, and your path becomes sharper, more defined. You will gain power. Access to lost knowledge. The ability to rewrite a fragment of fate. But..." "But what?" "You will owe me." Yuuto’s breath fogged in the cold air. He stared at the card. "What if I say no?" "Then walk away. Return to your quests. Drift like a leaf on a river. But take the card, and you carve a destiny that even gods must respect." He reached out. His fingers brushed the card—and in that moment, visions slammed into him. Flashes of fire. Cities in ruin. Lyra standing on a battlefield, eyes hollow. Rei whispering secrets to shadows. A serpent with a crown of stars hissing his name. Yuuto staggered, breath caught in his throat. "What... was that?" "A glimpse," the Merchant said softly, "of what could be." Yuuto closed his eyes. Everything in him screamed to walk away. To stay safe. But he remembered the day he found the app. The way the world had shifted. He wasn't the same boy hiding in his apartment anymore. He took the card. The Merchant bowed. "Wise. Reckless. Human. You may yet surprise us all." The card dissolved into light, flowing into his chest like liquid fire. The app dinged. [New Ability Unlocked: Pact-Bound Insight. Passive Skill - See Fragments of Future Paths.] [Warning: Celestial Debt Incurred. Payment Due: Unknown.] "What now?" Yuuto asked. But the Merchant was gone. Only the mist remained, curling around his feet. Yuuto turned away from the docks, his path more uncertain than ever. But one thing was clear: the Hunt was accelerating. And every move he made from here on out would have consequences. He clenched his fists. So be it. He would become more than just a player. He would become the wildcard even gods feared.
