Chapter 5: A Rift in Friendship

791 Words
As Lilei continued to support Lily, she couldn't help but notice Ethan's frequent glances in her direction. At first, she brushed it off, assuming he was simply looking at Lily. But as the moments persisted, she couldn't help but tease Lily about it. During a sleepover party at Lily's house, the group decided to play truth or dare. The bottle landed on Ethan, and with a mischievous smile, Lily couldn't resist asking him a revealing question. Lily: (excited) Ethan, truth or dare? Ethan: (nervous) Uh, truth, I guess. Lily: (grinning) Who's your crush? Ethan: (hesitant) Can you ask me another question, please? Lily: (playful) Oh, come on! Just give us a clue! Ethan: (reluctantly) Well, she's part of our friend group. Benjamin: Just give us another clue, like the last letter of her name. Ethan: Fine. It's the fifth letter of the word feelings. Lily's smile faded as she realized the answer wasn't what she had hoped for. The other members of the group chuckled, understanding the implications of Ethan's response. Later that night, when everyone had gone to sleep, Lily approached Lilei in the kitchen, seeking answers. Lily: (curious) Lilei, don't act innocent. You knew that Ethan had a crush on you, didn't you? Lilei: (surprised) Yes, I found out recently, but I had no idea before that. Lily: (accusatory) I knew it! You've been kind to him because you liked him too! Lilei: (defensive) Is it a crime to be kind to anyone? And why would I be mean to him? I've always seen him as a friend, nothing more. Lily: (frustrated) Then prove it to me! Ignore him and show me that you don't have feelings for him. Lilei: (firm) Why should I ignore him? It's not his fault for having feelings, and I respect that. I've already told you, I don't have romantic feelings for him. Lily: (resentful) I guess you really did have feelings for him! I was the first one to like him, before you came into our lives. I wish I had never met you. You're just here to ruin everything. If it weren't for you, Ethan would have had a crush on me! Lilei couldn't hold back her tears as Lily's words pierced through her heart. Lilei: (crying) Would Ethan's feelings have changed if I hadn't been in both of your lives? I hope you realize the weight of what you just said. Lily was left speechless, realizing the impact of her words. Lilei rushed to the living room and cried herself to sleep. The next morning, both Lilei and Lily remained silent, the tension between them palpable. Lilei decided to leave early, skipping breakfast with her friends. Lily, still harboring anger towards Lilei, couldn't understand why she was behaving this way. Ethan: (concerned) What's wrong with Lilei? She's been going home early and hardly saying a word. Ava: (teasingly) Oh, looks like someone cares about Lilei. Lily: (snapping) Can you please shut up? Benjamin whispered to the group, sensing Lilei's somber mood. Benjamin: (whispering) I think she's not in the mood. She looks really grumpy. Days turned into weeks, and Lilei's absence in their group activities became a mystery to her friends. Lily, burdened by guilt, tried to apologize to Lilei but was met with silence and avoidance. Unable to bear her guilt any longer, Lily decided to confront Lilei one day after class. She grabbed Lilei's arm and pulled her into a corner, desperate for reconciliation. Lilei: (guarded) What do you want, stranger? Lily: (earnestly) Lilei, I'm truly sorry for what I said to you at the sleepover. Lilei: (skeptical) How do you know my name, stranger? Lily: (serious) I'm serious, Lilei. I know what I said was hurtful, and I deeply regret it. Lilei: (doubtful) An apology won't change the hurtful words you said that night. Lily: (pleading) Please, I'm begging you. You can have Ethan if that's what you want. Lilei: (exasperated) When will you ever listen to me? I've already told you, I never liked him. I guess I should spell it out for you: I-N-E-V-E-R L-I-K-E-D H-I-M, and I-N-E-V-E-R W-I-L-L. Or should I post it on a billboard? Lily: (defeated) Okay, I get it. I regret everything I've said. I promise I'll think before I speak from now on. How can I make it up to you? Lilei: (resolute) Just leave me alone, that's all I ask. Lily: (softly) Okay, I'll leave you alone. I promise. With those words, their conversation ended, leaving both girls feeling a mix of emotions. Lilei needed time to heal, and Lily was left grappling with the weight of her hurtful words. Their friendship remained strained, and their once vibrant bond was now overshadowed by the hurt and misunderstanding that had unfolded.
