Cassandra's Pov. “Cassie, it really is you.” He smiled, as he said my name like everything was fine. I stood frozen, with teary eyes. As soon as the lights turned green, I bolted, not giving Damian a chance to say another word. As I walked home, my vision was blurry. The city sounds faded in the background. I was swelled with questions and emotions. Later when I got home, I was surprised at the sight of Marcus and Lucia napping so peacefully, they looked so cute. “Marcus… Marcus.” My voice came through, barely a whisper. “Hi, you're back.” Marcus responded, as soon as he opened his eyes. “Told you I wouldn't be gone for long. “Are you okay? Did Lucia cause you any trouble?” “Getting her to fall asleep was the issue, but even the strongest beasts can be tamed.” He said, pointing at Lucia. “Thank you.” “My pleasure, how about you. You don't look okay, is everything good.” Marcus asked. I let out an awkward laugh, before answering. “Of course I'm okay, why wouldn't I be?” I obviously couldn't tell Marcus that I met my ex husband on my way home. And worse, he seemed happy to see me. “Okay then… I'll take my leave.” Marcus said. “Oh, you're not going to wait till Lucia gets up, don't you want to say goodbye?” I asked. “Maybe some other time, she probably wouldn't mind.” “And if she gets upset, I could always get her ice cream to make up,” he added. We both laughed at what Marcus had said. I saw him out the door. “Bye and thank you again.” He nodded, waving bye before he left. I let out a sigh, I couldn't stop thinking of Damian and his sudden appearance. Just then I looked over at Lucia, getting to see Damian again, I realised Lucia looked just like him. His blue eyes, and those adorable lips. I couldn't focus, I kept thinking. “What if we ran into each other again?” What if he sees Lucia. “Why was he here? Did he want to rekindle things?” Well I didn't care, I wasn't going to let this man into my life again. The week crawled by, and I had quickly forgotten about Damian's sudden appearance. I was going to be busy all day, it's the taste test for my new menu launch. The event was to start by 3pm, so Lucia and I went to the supermarket to get some balloons and supplies we'd need for the decorations. “Mommy, can we take a look at the toys section after this?” Lucia asked. “Yes, but only if we still have time.” I replied. I could see Lucia's face lit up. “Okat then, we better start fast.” She Said. Shopping didn't take much time, I already had a list of what I wanted. I was standing at the counter, ready to pay. I checked my bag for my wallet, but it wasn't there. I realised I had left it in the car. “Lucia, I have to go get my wallet from the car. Be good, stay right here.” I clearly said. “Lucia, you better not move…” I added, squeezing her cheek playfully before leaving. I rushed in, giving the Casher my card. I looked around, and I couldn't see Lucia. “Excuse me… there was a kid right here, a little girl.” Where is she?” The Casher said he had.seen no kids, so I looked everywhere for Lucia. As I searched every corner of the supermarket, I started having thoughts like. I'm such a bad Mom, why did I leave her there alone. Where could she be now, hope nothing bad happens to her.” Lucia— I called out as I ran, searching every aisle. Instincts told me to check the toys section. “Lucia…” There she was, she was with a man whose face I couldn't see because his back faced my direction. “Lu…cia” I called out. “Mommy…” she said with a smile. I definitely wasn't in the mood for that. I grabbed her arm, “Sorry sir” I said without even looking at the man's face. I was just so pissed, I thought I had lost my daughter. “Sorry, if she was any trouble to you.” He turned to look at me, as he said “It’s fine, she wasn't in any trouble.” My eyes widened, it was Damian again. I didn't know what to feel. I just stood there, looking at him. “Mommy…” Lucia said, nudging me as I regained myself. I could feel my legs failing. “Cassie, are you okay…?” Damian asked, trying to put his hand on my shoulder. I stopped him before he could touch me. “I'm fine, Lucia let's go.” I held Lucia, already making my way out. “Cassie, wait let's talk.” I walked off, he followed behind. “Can you stop? Stop following me, please…” I said, fighting back tears. As I walked away from Damian, I felt all kinds of emotions welled up inside of me. “Lucia! I said to stay right there and don't move, why didn't you listen.” “And since when was talking to strangers allowed?” I was fuming at this point, I didn't know if it was the thought of losing Lucia or was it getting to see Damian again. “Mommy but I—” “I don't want to hear it, get in the car.” I wasn't going to let all this get to me, I had an event to run. I pushed open the door to my cafe, took a deep breath, letting the kitchen's energetic pulse steadied my racing heart, as I began prepping for the menu launch. The cafe buzzed with excitement, as guests arrived for the menu launch event. I was still shaken from my encounter with Damian, but I had to focus on the evening festivities. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods wafted through the air, enticing the guests. Live music played softly in the background, adding to the cozy environment. As guests mingled, I offered samples of my new creations. I personally explained the inspiration behind each dish, sharing stories and passion. Guests raved about the flavours, and creativity of the new menu items. Photos of dishes were taken, and of guests enjoying themselves. Capturing the moment for social media. And with that, the event was a success. With guests loving my creation and appreciating my efforts put into crafting. Sure I was exhausted but elated, still I was proud of the dedication I put into this event. After the menu launch, I had more customers than I could handle. My cafe turned super popular overnight. “Wow… you're like a mini celebrity now.” Marcus said, as we had some freshly baked pastries. “You could say that! I have the best dessert you could ever find.” I replied. Suddenly, the cafe's line rang. I hurried up to answer. “Hello… It's Cassandra from the sugar nest cafe. “How can we help you today?” “Cassie, it's me Damian. I'd appreciate it if you'd make some time so we could talk.” I ended the call at the sound of that voice.
