Saige’s POV
Cadence actually looked in my eyes when he spoke to me? I’ve been here two years and he hasn’t done that since my first day here. And when he did, I felt something stir deep inside me. I wanted nothing more than for him to sweep me off my feet and kiss me. I had always been drawn to Cadence, but this was different. This was primal.
I shake the feeling off, thinking it must be the nerves, and head down to the party. Everything is so beautiful. With all of the flowers, fountains, and twinkling lights, it’s like we’re in a fairy tale. The food is out of this world! Ronan truly spared no expense. I see wine and champagne flown in from France. There were wagyu steaks from Japan. Truffles, oysters, caviar, lobster. All kinds of delicacies from all over the world.
If this was for his 18th birthday, I cannot wait to see what his wedding looks like. And the Luna ceremony when he finds his mate.
“Saige… Is that you?” I hear someone say. I turn around and see an older woman with white hair coming toward me. She looks familiar.
“Luna Anna? Is that you?” I ask, remembering the name of the Luna from my old pack.
“Yes! Oh Saige it is you!” She embraces me. “How are you? We were hoping to see you tonight!”
“The Harvest Moon pack was invited?” I ask nervously, looking around, hoping that Ronan doesn’t see me fraternizing with my old pack.
“Yes! We figured you made sure we were invited. Oh we miss you so much Saige!” Luna Anna’s eyes go white while she Mindlinks the Alpha of the Harvest Moon pack. “Alpha Michael is on his way. He was grabbing me some of those delicious little peach candies. He will be so excited to see you!”
I take a step back from her. “How can you say that? You gave me up! Don’t act like you care about me when you gave me up without even trying to work something out!” At this point, I’m yelling, “I lost my parents and my pack within just a few months! You abandoned me! Thankfully Alpha Ronan is so kind hearted, but you guys didn’t know that! He could have killed me or enslaved me! And you didn’t care!”
“Saige…” she says, taking a step toward me. “We had to think about the pack. You have to understand. He would have wiped us out. And do not speak to your Luna like that,” she says.
“You are my Luna no longer,” I retort. “My loyalty is to the pack that actually wanted me.”
At this point, we’ve earned an audience. Alpha Michael shows up at the same time that Cadence and Ronan do.
“Ah, Saige. I see that you’ve run in to your old pack,” Alpha Ronan says to me. “Welcome Luna Anna and Alpha Michael,” he turns to them with a smile on his face. “How are you two on this fine evening?”
“Well, I for one would be much better if Saige showed some respect to her Luna,” Luna Anna says, all huffy.
“I told you, you are no longer my Luna. My loyalty lies with the pack that actually wanted me, the Blue Moon pack,” I say with a shrug.
“And to think,” Alpha Michael starts, “We were going to welcome you back once you turned 18 and could decide where you wanted to be. That will obviously no longer be the case.”
“Why would I want to go back?” I ask. “So you can treat me like I’m disposable? No thank you. I’m valued here. Your pack means nothing to me.”
“It was your parent’s pack Saige,” Alpha Ronan says me. “We would understand if you wanted to return. I invited Alpha Michael and Luna Anna here tonight so they could extend that invitation to you, if you so wanted it. It won’t be long now before you are 18 and will be able to make your own choices,” he says, looking at me intently.
I don’t know why, but my thoughts immediately go to Cadence. The idea of leaving him was actually physically painful. What is going on? Why am I so attached to him? I’ve barely gotten the chance to get to know him.
“Alpha Ronan, you are my dad. You have cared for me and provided for me these years. My loyalty lies with you and our new Alpha, Alpha Cadence. Blue Moon pack is my family. I fully intend to stay with the pack once I turn 18.”
Alpha Ronan smiles. I see Cadence behind him let out a sigh, almost like he is relieved.
“I am so happy to hear that Saige,” Alpha Ronan says.
“And with that, I think it is time to Alpha Michael and Luna Anna to take their leave,” Alpha Ronan looks at Alpha Michael.
“Excuse me?” Alpha Michael says.
“You are excused,” Cadence steps in. “You have clearly upset Saige and she does not want you here. As a high ranking member of this pack, we do need to take her needs into consideration. And unfortunately, you just don’t make the cut.”
Alpha Michael stands his ground, “Alpha Cadence, we were extended an invitation tonight.”
“Yes, and you have fulfilled the purpose of your invitation. We no longer require you to be here.”
Alpha Michael looks at the three of us, “Making enemies on your first night as Alpha, Alpha Cadence? Not a smart move.” Michael looks directly in to my eyes, “You will come to regret this.”
Cadence steps in front of me, shielding me from Alpha Michael’s gaze, “I’m sure we won’t. You will take your leave.”
And with that, Alpha Michael and Luna Anna link hands, turn around and depart. The crowd that has surrounded us boos them out of the party.
Alpha Ronan turns to me and embraces me, “I am so proud to have you as a member of my pack. You will be a fierce warrior and leader in this pack. I can feel it in my heart.” He turns to Cadence, “Son, I think we should have a talk. In private.”
Then Alpha Ronan turns to the rest of the partygoers, “And the rest of you, get back to celebrating my son!” The crowd bursts out cheering and goes back to partying.
Before leaving with his father, Cadence looks at me, in the eyes again, and says, “Saige, I am so very happy to hear that you intend to stay with the Blue Moon pack.”
And before I can respond, he turns and heads to his new office with his father.
