Chapter 1 - A Little Backstory

658 Words
For how close our pack was, I never thought that they would put me in this situation when my parents unexpectedly abandoned the pack. My parents were the Gammas of the Harvest Moon pack, well respected and loved throughout our community. Until one day they disappeared without a trace, leaving my pack to pick up the pieces. At first, everyone thought they had been kidnapped. We had mounted search parties and traveled all over the United States looking for them. It was strange we couldn’t reach them by Mindlink, but if they were taken by something like witches, then that could explain the silence. And then one day they came to collect, with my parent’s heads stashed in their suitcases. They were from the Blue Moon Pack, strongest pack in the tri-state area, and they had come to collect for my parent’s grave mistake. It wasn’t enough that they had my parent’s lives, they wanted mine too. I was 13 at the time. And my pack, for fear of being wiped out, handed me over with barely a tear. The Alpha of the Blue Moon pack at the time, Ronan, told me my parents had snuck into his home and slaughtered his wife and youngest daughter. They were on their way to his son’s room when they were caught. How they managed this, no one was quite sure. But sure enough, there was video footage of them in his home the night of the slaughter, going from room to room. As revenge, he was taking their only child in, to raise as his own. I lived in the main packhouse and was allowed to stay in my own, very nice room on the same floor as his only living child. I was given everything I needed, clothes, books, toys, school supplies. I never really wanted for anything. One thing though, I was no longer allowed to mention my parents. They were basically completed wiped from my existence. If I mentioned them, the punishment was swift and harsh. Days without food or exposed to the elements, not being allowed to shift to my wolf. All of the items that I had taken from the Harvest Moon packhouse had been taken from me, and I was forced to swear allegiance to the Blue Moon pack. Outside of that, Ronan did treat me as his own. His son, Cadence, didn’t seem to like me. He was 16 at the time I was taken in, and due to take over the pack in just a couple of years. He mostly ignored me. And when he was forced to acknowledge me, it was with as few words as possible. He never could look me in the eyes, instead focusing on something directly behind my head when I had to talk to me. Cadence was gorgeous. Even at 16, the women of the pack fawned over him. Unmated she-wolves talking about how badly they hoped he would be their mate when he turned 18. That’s the earliest when wolves can find their mates, and some of these women had been waiting decades. Cadence had jet black, curly hair and the most vibrant green eyes you’ve ever seen. If you looked closely enough, you could see golden flecks in his eyes. His face had to have been modeled after a Greek god, with how chiseled it was. Even at 16, he was very invested in the daily routine of the packhouse. He sometimes helped in the kitchen in the morning, he watched over everyone’s training, he helped the little ones with their school work, and even helped the omegas with their chores sometimes. He stated that it was to better know the pack that he would one day be running. It made sense. But I also think he was just a kind hearted person, who wanted to be helpful in any way he could. He was nice to everyone, except me, who he just ignored.
