A Bad Tempered Boar It was the first week of December and the Vales were behind in their farm work. The root harvest should have been finished by now, but recent events had changed that. Vale acquired help on the first of the month, which was badly needed for some time. George and Emma Sykes worked for Wilfred Penstock until his recent death. The Squire took over the running of the farm with his own staff. He owned the farm, but had rented it to the Penstocks; now it would be his again. Emma used to keep house and George worked the farm, but now all was changed. Young Samuel was hired by Basehart, with the promise he would one day be able to take over the farm as his father had done.
