Nothing was seen or heard of the Stickles for several days. Part of this was inclement weather. North winds and snow swept across the landscape. Another reason, according to gossip, was the Stickles had left the moors. This was something people were hoping was true. Another fact seemed to imply their disappearance after the two officers were hanged, not an unreasonable thought. And with the robbery of the mail coach, they had money enough to stay anywhere. What ever the reason, a few days of peace and quiet was very welcome in the vicinity of Rexford.
The Constable remained at home studying maps of the moor, hoping to find a likely place they might be staying. Another reason he stayed home was, people knew where they could reach him if he was needed.
