AUTHOR’S NOTE Finishing a story is an odd feeling, especially this one. Because, when it all began, the world was a very different place! In late 2019, when I started writing the first ‘Gideon Rayne’ book, ‘Maelstorm’, I had no clue that I would soon be rushed into hospital and narrowly avoid dying from a deadly new virus. Or that I was about to live through a pandemic and time of social and political upheaval not unlike some of the ideas I had used in my, rather bleak, vision of the future. It got to a point where I started to wonder if I shouldn’t maybe start writing about my lottery numbers coming up, or getting a shiny new car!
