The meeting ended once I reluctantly assured the three partners that I would adhere to the rules and follow the instructions as they were given to me.
As we left, I quickly caught up to Winter.
"Would you mind if we had a word?" I said softly.
Winter did not look at all keen but obliged me and led me to her office on the floor below.
"What is it that you need to discuss in private, Colbert?" she asked. She sounded tense. I assumed it was because she despised being taken by surprise by unscheduled things. This conversation was definitely unscheduled.
"I am curious, and I mean to speak off the record here, about our 'employer.' I'm sure you did not just blindly accept this role without asking questions as to who he or she might be."
