Chapter 3: Intoxicating Luxury

2241 Words
The alarm screamed at 5 AM, but Alina had been staring at the ceiling since four. Her heart wouldn't stop pounding—a crazy mix of excitement and pure terror that had her tossing and turning all night. Today was going to change everything. Today was her interview at TechNova Corp. She stood in front of her tiny bedroom mirror, barely recognizing herself. The gray blazer that looked so plain yesterday somehow made her look... different. Professional. The crisp white shirt, the black pants that actually fit her perfectly, and her shoes shined until they gleamed. She twisted her hair up with a simple clip and added just enough makeup to look fresh and put-together. I can do this, she told herself, even though her hands were shaking. "You look beautiful, sweetheart." Her mom's voice came from the doorway, and Alina could see tears forming in her eyes. "Your dad would be so proud of you." Alina's throat tightened. She turned and hugged her mom quickly, breathing in the familiar scent of her mother's perfume—the cheap kind they could still afford. "Pray for me, Ma. This has to work out. It just has to." "I know you'll be amazing." When the taxi rolled into Jakarta's business district, Alina felt like Alice falling down the rabbit hole. Massive glass towers reached toward the clouds, expensive cars glided by like they were floating, and everyone walking around looked like they owned the world. This used to be her world too, back when her family had money. Now it felt like visiting a foreign country. "TechNova Corp Tower," the driver said, craning his neck to look up. "Fanciest building in the whole district. You got an interview there? Lucky girl." Alina forced a smile, clutching her folder of documents so tight her knuckles were white. Lucky? She hoped her luck was finally turning around. When the taxi stopped, her legs felt like jelly as she stepped out. The building in front of her was insane—all glass and steel reaching up to the sky like something out of a movie. The "TechNova Corp" sign hung across the entrance, sleek and modern and screaming success. Okay, Alina. You've got this. She walked through the entrance and nearly tripped over her own feet. The lobby was absolutely stunning. White marble floors so shiny she could see her reflection, crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling like something from a palace, and glass walls showing off an indoor garden that looked like paradise. In the center, a fountain bubbled peacefully, making the whole space feel calm and expensive. Holy crap. I don't belong here. "Good morning. You must be Miss Alina Sari." A woman in a navy blazer walked over with a professional smile. "I'm Melissa from HR. We've been waiting for you." "Good morning, Miss Melissa. Thank you so much for giving me this chance." Alina shook her hand, trying to hide how blown away she was by everything around her. "Actually..." Melissa's smile got a little weird. "There's something I need to talk to you about. Can we go somewhere private?" Oh no. They're going to cancel the interview. I knew this was too good to be true. Melissa led her to a private elevator that was nicer than most hotel rooms—mirrored walls with gold trim, marble floors, and soft music playing. Alina kept her face calm even though inside she was freaking out. "Miss Alina," Melissa said once they were sitting across from each other in a fancy little conference room, "I have some news that might surprise you." Alina's heart started racing. *Please don't say they found someone better. Please.* "You won't need to interview today," Melissa continued. The world crashed down around her. "Oh... I get it. If you've already chosen someone else—" "Wait, let me finish." Melissa held up her hand, still smiling. "You don't need an interview because Mr. James—our CEO—has already decided to hire you directly." Alina sat there like a statue, eyes wide. "I'm sorry... what?" "Mr. James looked at your resume personally and was so impressed that he told me to skip the whole interview process. Welcome to TechNova Corp." Melissa pulled out a thick folder. "This is your contract as Executive Assistant. It's a really important position that reports directly to the top executives." Alina stared at the folder, her emotions all over the place. She was happy—so happy—but also confused as hell. "Miss Melissa," she said carefully, "I'm incredibly grateful, but... I have to be honest. I just graduated. I have zero real work experience. Executive Assistant is usually for people with years of experience. Why would Mr. James be so sure about me without even meeting me?" Melissa paused like she was picking her words super carefully. "Mr. James has amazing instincts about people. He thinks that sometimes natural talent and the right attitude matter more than experience. He saw exactly what he was looking for in your resume." The answer didn't really satisfy Alina's curiosity, but she didn't want to sound ungrateful. Maybe good things really did happen sometimes. "Okay," she said finally. "I'm honored, and I'll work harder than anyone to prove he made the right choice." "Perfect!" Melissa looked relieved. "Now let me show you around so you can get familiar with everything." Back in the elevator, Melissa started explaining the building. "We have twenty-eight floors. Ground floor is public areas, floors two through five are operations, six through ten are IT, eleven through fifteen are marketing and finance, sixteen through twenty are management, and twenty-one through twenty-eight are executive levels. Your desk will be on the twenty-fifth floor, right near Mr. James's office." When the elevator doors opened on twenty-five, Alina stepped into a completely different world. Everything was quieter, fancier, more sophisticated. Thick carpet, wood-paneled walls, and lighting that made everything look warm and expensive. "Wow," she whispered before she could stop herself. "The executive floors are pretty special," Melissa said with a smile. "And this is your workspace." Alina found herself standing next to the most beautiful desk she'd ever seen—solid wood, with a leather chair that looked like it cost more than her family's monthly rent. But what made her heart stop was the huge window next to it showing the entire city spread out below like a sparkling carpet. "It's incredible," she managed, her voice shaky with emotion. For the first time in months, she felt like she could breathe again. Like maybe she belonged somewhere after all. "Let's keep looking around," Melissa said. The tour that followed left Alina's head spinning. Conference rooms with smart glass that turned private with the push of a button, sound systems that were better than movie theaters, and climate control that kept everything perfect. The employee kitchen looked like a fancy restaurant, complete with professional coffee machines, imported snacks, fresh fruit, and an actual chef making lunch. "This is our fitness center," Melissa said, opening doors to reveal a room full of top-of-the-line equipment. Treadmills, weights, yoga area, even a mini sauna. "Employees can use this anytime for free. We have personal trainers come in twice a week too." Alina nodded, trying to keep her jaw from dropping. She used to think a basic gym membership was a luxury. Now she had access to something that belonged in a five-star hotel. "And this," Melissa opened another door, "is our relaxation room. For when you need to decompress." Inside were plush couches, dim lighting, calming music, and aromatherapy that made the whole space feel like a spa. A few employees were taking power naps or sipping tea. "Mr. James really believes in work-life balance," Melissa explained. "He says happy employees do their best work." Every time someone mentioned James—*Mr. James*—Alina got more curious about this mysterious CEO. From the company website, she knew James Leonhart was young and had built TechNova from nothing. But everything else about him was a mystery. "What's Mr. James like?" Alina asked as they walked back to the twenty-fifth floor. Melissa smiled, but something flickered in her eyes. "Mr. James is... very professional. Completely dedicated to his work. And he's a total perfectionist. He expects the best from everyone, including himself." She paused, then continued, "But he's fair. As long as you work hard and get results, Mr. James will appreciate you. Just... don't let him down." The way Melissa said that last part sent a little chill down Alina's spine. But she shook it off. Probably just nerves about working with the CEO. "Oh, by the way," Melissa checked her watch, "tomorrow morning is our monthly meeting with all department heads and Mr. James. It'll be your first time meeting him. Make sure you have a great introduction ready. First impressions are everything here." Alina's heart started racing again. "Of course. I'll be ready." "Good. Now let me introduce you to some of the people you'll be working with." The rest of the day felt like living in a dream. Alina met department heads who were friendly and welcoming. They had lunch in the executive dining room, which was basically a high-end restaurant. "So Alina, what's your background?" asked Sandra, the VP of Marketing, while eating salmon that looked like it belonged in a magazine. Alina hesitated. She couldn't exactly talk about her family going broke or how they'd been struggling. "I just graduated. This is my first real job." "Fresh graduate straight to Executive Assistant? That's pretty unusual," said David from Finance, looking curious. "Mr. James must see something really special in you." Special? Alina had no idea what could be special about her. And honestly, the whole situation was getting weirder by the minute. "Mr. James personally reviewed Alina's resume and approved her immediately," Melissa added. "He said her profile was exactly what he was looking for." This just made Alina more confused. A CEO who was supposedly super busy and perfectionist took time to personally look at her resume? And hired her without even meeting her? What was really going on? When the workday ended, Alina stood by her new desk watching the city lights start to twinkle outside her window. Jakarta looked amazing from up here, like scattered diamonds. Her emotions were all mixed up—grateful and excited, but also anxious and full of questions she couldn't answer. Why me? Why no interview? Why such an important job? She pulled out her phone and called her mom. "Ma, my first day is over," she said, her voice shaking. "How did it go, sweetheart? Did the interview go well?" "That's the weird thing, Ma. There was no interview. The CEO decided to hire me directly as Executive Assistant. The office is like a palace. Amazing facilities, and I have a desk on the executive floor with this incredible view of the city." Her mom was quiet for a moment. "Executive Assistant? That's a pretty senior job for someone who just graduated, isn't it?" "That's what I keep thinking too, Ma. But maybe it's just good luck. I'll work really hard to prove I deserve it." "Be careful, honey. If anything feels wrong, tell me right away." "I will, Ma. Tomorrow I meet the CEO. I'm so nervous." "You'll do great. But stay alert." After hanging up, Alina packed her things while thinking about her mom's warning. Something definitely wasn't normal about this situation. But for now, she wanted to be grateful and hope everything would work out. What she didn't know was that someone was watching her from behind the blinds of an office on the same floor. James Leonhart stood there observing Alina as she got ready to leave, his face showing nothing. He held a cup of cold coffee in one hand, the other clenched in his pocket. His jaw tightened as he watched the confused but hopeful smile on Alina's face. "Enjoy this sweet confusion, Alina," he whispered, his voice cold and low. "Because very soon, everything will become crystal clear." He closed the blinds and went back to his desk, covered with papers. On his laptop screen was Alina Sari's complete file—photos, personal information, and her family's entire history. Including details about her father's bankruptcy and their current money problems. James smiled, but it was cold and didn't reach his eyes. A smile that hid plans he'd been making very carefully for a very long time. "Welcome back into my life, Alina," he murmured, closing the laptop. "This time, we're playing by my rules." That night, Alina fell asleep dreaming about glass towers and city views and a bright future—but also full of huge question marks about why all this was happening to her. She had no idea that across the building, someone was planning to turn that confusion into her worst nightmare. Two hearts that had been connected in the past were about to meet again. One full of hope and questions about a new beginning, the other carrying revenge that had turned ice-cold over the years. And tomorrow, when their eyes met again, fate would start showing cards that had been hidden in this complicated game of love and revenge. Alina's life had just found some light again, but it was about to enter its darkest chapter. And she had no clue what was coming for her.
