Chapter 9

1001 Words
"Milton?" Peter calls, moving toward his friend with concern etched across his features. "Are you alright?" But Milton doesn't respond. Can't respond. His wolf has taken the reins completely, pushing his human half into the background as ancient instincts override years of denial. His body moves of its own accord, each step bringing him closer to Clover as she completes her shift back to human form. Theodore sees the change in Milton's demeanour and reaches for his daughter protectively, but Alpha Frederick's hand on his shoulder stops him. "Don't," the Alpha warns quietly. "This is beyond your control now." Clover stands tall in her reformed ceremonial dress, the fabric shimmering as if it contains captured starlight. The successful shift has filled her with newfound confidence, her amber eyes bright with the power of her wolf just beneath the surface. She feels different, stronger, more complete, but that sensation is quickly overshadowed by awareness of Milton's approach. "What are you doing?" she asks, her voice steady despite the strange energy crackling between them. The entire pack holds its breath, sensing that they're witnessing something momentous. Even those who moments ago had mocked Clover now watch in stunned silence as their Alpha Heir stalks toward her with unmistakable purpose. “Alpha Heir?” But instead of saying anything, he took her into his arms and kissed her. The shock of Milton's kiss reverberates through the ceremonial circle like a thunderclap. Pack members gasp in unison, their collective breath drawing a sudden vacuum in the charged air. For Clover, time seems to slow as Milton's lips press against hers, warm, insistent, and impossibly right. Her wolf, Sage, howls in triumphant recognition within her mind. -Finally!- Sage exults. -Our mate!- The word echoes through Clover's consciousness, impossible yet undeniable. Mate. The Alpha Heir who has tormented her for years, who has dismissed and belittled her at every turn, is her fated mate. The universe's cruellest joke. Milton's wolf has taken complete control, acting on instinct older than civilisation itself. The taste of Clover, honey and wildflowers and something uniquely her, floods his senses, confirming what his animal half has known for years. His human consciousness flounders in shock, unable to process the truth his wolf has embraced without reservation. -Mine,- his wolf declares possessively. -Always mine.- Around them, the sacred fire flares higher, bathing the stone circle in supernatural blue light. The ancient rocks begin to hum with energy, a resonance felt in the bones of every witness rather than heard. Grandmother Willow nods in solemn understanding, her ancient eyes filled with the wisdom of countless generations. "The Goddess has spoken," she announces, her voice carrying across the suddenly silent gathering. "A fated pair stands before us." Theodore stares in horror at the tableau before him, his carefully laid plans crumbling to dust. His daughter, whom he intended to pair with Peter to secure his own legacy, locked in an embrace with the Alpha Heir. Not just any embrace, but the unmistakable claiming of true mates. The political implications cascade through his mind like falling dominoes, each one striking another until the entire structure of his ambitions lies in ruins. "This cannot be," he whispers, more to himself than anyone else. Silvie places a restraining hand on her mate's arm, her fingers digging into his flesh in warning. "Do not interfere with Goddess-blessed bonds," she hisses. "Not even you are that foolish." Peter watches the scene unfold with a complex mixture of emotions churning within him. Relief that he won't be forced to claim Clover under false pretences wars with the sharp sting of jealousy. His wolf whines in disappointment, but not in surprise. Some part of him has always sensed the connection between Milton and Clover, even when they themselves were blind to it. Milton finally breaks the kiss, though his arms remain firmly around Clover's waist. His eyes have cleared somewhat, human consciousness reasserting itself alongside his wolf's primal certainty. He stares down at Clover with wonder and confusion in equal measure, trying to reconcile years of deliberate blindness with the sudden understanding. Clover shock still ran through her, and her face paled ‘They’ll expect him to reject me now, oh Goddess.’ And with that, she was off and running. Milton's body lurches forward instinctively, his wolf howling in panic as Clover flees. The sudden emptiness in his arms feels wrong on a primal level, like losing a limb he didn't know he needed until this moment. "Clover!" he shouts, her name tearing from his throat. The pack parts before her as she runs, no one daring to impede her escape. Some watch with sympathy, others with barely concealed satisfaction at the drama unfolding. Years of resentment and dismissal have left few true allies among them. Theodore stands frozen, his mind racing to salvage some advantage from this unexpected development. A fated mate bond to the Alpha Heir would secure his daughter's position more effectively than any arranged mating with Peter, but the look of horror on Clover's face suggests complications he hadn't anticipated. Two of his friends began to laugh, not because it was funny. Milton felt like she had rejected, but it was their words that sent ice down his spine. “The loser ran before Milton could fully come back to Earth.” The first stated. “Yeah, because after all these years of rejecting her as even a person, not that she's much of one, he would have rejected her, so she ran before he could say the words.” Milton's blood turns to ice in his veins. The cruel laughter echoes in his ears, but it's the words themselves that slice through the fog of confusion still clouding his mind. Years of his own cruelty toward Clover play through his memory in rapid succession, each dismissal, each cutting remark, each time he'd deliberately undermined her confidence. His wolf is frantic now, clawing desperately against his consciousness, demanding he chase after her. -Find her! Protect her! Claim her!-
