Chapter 2: The Broken Wings

398 Words
Days turned into weeks, but the heavy shroud of grief and silence refused to lift from the house. The laughter that once echoed within those four walls had vanished, replaced by the haunting sound of muffled sobs. Saina tried her best to be the pillar of strength for her parents, but deep down, she felt her own world crumbling into dust. Every time she stepped out, the piercing gazes of the villagers felt like shards of glass cutting through her soul. Saina had dreams—vibrant, ambitious dreams. She wanted to finish her education and find a job that would restore the dignity her family had lost. However, her father, once a man of progressive thoughts, had been shattered by Raheema’s actions. The betrayal had turned his trust into suspicion and his pride into fear. One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of bruised purple, he called Saina to the porch. His eyes, once bright with fatherly pride, were now hollow and weary, reflecting a soul that had given up. "Saina," he whispered, his voice trembling like a withered leaf. "I cannot let another daughter bring shame to this house. We have found a match for you. His name is Shajahan. He is a hard worker from the neighboring village." Saina’s heart skipped a beat, a cold chill running down her spine. "But Father, my studies... I wanted to..." her voice trailed off as she caught her mother’s pleading eyes. Her mother was clutching her chest, her health deteriorating rapidly since Raheema’s departure. "The village is talking, Saina," her mother said, her voice barely a whisper, thick with desperation. "They say we cannot keep our daughters under control. If you marry now, it will silence the whispers. It will protect Rafeek’s future." Saina felt like a bird whose wings were being clipped just as it was learning to reach for the sky. She knew nothing about Shajahan, other than the fact that he was uneducated and lived a life far removed from the one she had envisioned. Yet, looking at her father’s slumped shoulders and her mother’s tearful face, Saina realized she was the currency being used to buy back the family's lost honor. With a heavy heart and silent tears, she slowly nodded, surrendering her dreams to the cold altar of family reputation.
