Chapter 4: The Silent Language of Kindness.

359 Words
The first few days in Shajahan’s house were a blur of tears and silence for Saina. The house was small, but it was kept meticulously clean. There were no newspapers delivered in the morning, no intellectual debates over tea, and no mention of the world outside the village boundaries. To Saina, it felt like she had stepped back in time. Shajahan was a man of few words. He left for work before the sun rose and returned late in the evening, his clothes covered in the dust of the fields. Saina spent her days doing household chores, her mind constantly drifting back to her college hallways and the books she had left behind. She felt like a stranger in her own life. One evening, Saina was sitting on the porch, staring blankly at the darkening sky. She didn't hear Shajahan come in. He stood there for a moment, watching her. In his hand, he held a small, crumpled brown paper bag. Without a word, he placed it on the bench beside her. Saina opened it to find a set of colorful glass bangles and, to her utter surprise, a second-hand book in English—a romance novel he must have found at a local market. She looked up at him, stunned. "You... you bought this for me?" Shajahan looked down, a shy smile touching his weathered face. "I don't know how to read those letters," he said softly, his voice rough but gentle. "But I know you do. I saw you looking at the old newspapers I used for packing. I thought... maybe this would make you feel at home." In that moment, Saina realized that while Shajahan couldn't read the words in her books, he could read the sadness in her heart. He didn't have the education she prized, but he possessed a rare kind of empathy. For the first time since the wedding, the knot of resentment in Saina’s chest began to loosen. She realized that destiny hadn't just given her an illiterate husband; it had given her a protector who respected a part of her he didn't even understand.
