The Street King
Chapter 4: The Truth Unfolds
CHAPTER 4: Raised as a Boy
Den took a deep breath. He sat down on the bed. I sat beside him.
"Because of my father," he said. "He wanted a son. He always wanted a son. But my mother could not have more children. So he raised me as a boy."
I stared at him. "He raised you as a boy?"
"Yes," Den said. "He dressed me in boy's clothes. He called me by a boy's name. He made me act like a boy. He wanted me to be the son he never had."
"That is terrible," I said. "That is not right."
"I know," Den said. "But I could not refuse. He is my father. He is all I have. I had to do what he said."
I was silent. Processing.
"Then why did you become a spy?" I asked. "Why did he send you here?"
Den looked down at his hands. "He wanted me to prove myself. To show him that I could do the job. That I could be useful to him."
"And what do you want?" I asked. "What do you want for yourself?"
Den looked at me. His eyes were full of pain.
"I want to be free," he said. "I want to be myself. I want to be a girl. I want to wear pretty dresses and have long hair. I want to be... me."
I reached out. I took his hand.
"Then be yourself," I said. "Be whoever you want to be. I will support you. No matter what."
Den's tears fell faster. "You really mean that?"
"Yes," I said. "I mean it. You are my best friend. Nothing will change that."
Den threw his arms around me. He hugged me tightly.
"Thank you, Race," he whispered. "Thank you for accepting me."
I hugged him back. "Always, Den. Always."
---
The Truth
After that night, things changed between us.
Den started to be more himself. He stopped pretending. He let his guard down.
He even told me his real name. Jean.
But I still called him Den. It was the name I had grown to love. The name of my best friend.
And Den/Jane continued to help me with Lily. She would watch her when I was at practice. She would bring her food. She would play with her.
Lily loved her. "Den-Den is the best!" she would say.
I smiled. "Yes. Yes, she is."
But I knew we had to be careful. If anyone found out about Den's secret, she would be expelled. If anyone found out about Lily, I would be expelled.
We had to protect each other. And that is exactly what we did.
---
The Future
Months passed. Den and I grew closer. We were inseparable.
And Lily grew too. She was five years old now. Smart. Cheeky. Full of energy.
I knew I could not hide her forever. One day, I would have to find a way to give her a real life. A real home.
But for now, I was just happy to have her safe. Happy to have Den by my side.
We were a family. A strange family. But a family nonetheless.
And I would do anything to protect them.
The Jealousy
After that night, everything changed between us.
We had both revealed our secrets. Our true names. Our true selves.
"My real name is Jean," Den said. Her voice was soft. Vulnerable. "I have not told anyone that in years."
I looked at her. The girl who had been pretending to be a boy. The girl who had been hiding her true self for so long.
"My real name is Oliver," I said. "But no one has called me that since my parents died. I am Race now. I will always be Race."
Den nodded. "I understand. I will not call you Oliver. Not unless you want me to."
I smiled. "Thank you."
We sat in silence for a moment. The weight of our secrets hung in the air between us.
"Den," I said. "I will help you keep your secret. I will protect you. No one will find out."
She looked at me. Her eyes were full of gratitude.
"Thank you, Race," she said. "I do not know what I would do without you."
"I could say the same about you," I said. "You are the only person I trust. The only person who knows about Lily."
"We are a strange pair," Den said. "A street kid and a spy. Hiding in plain sight."
I laughed. "Yes. We are."
---
The Realization
Weeks passed. Den and I grew closer.
She was always there for me. She helped with Lily. She brought food. She kept me company. She listened when I needed to talk.
And I was always there for her. I protected her secret. I made sure no one got too close. I watched her back.
But something changed.
I started to notice things about Den. The way her eyes sparkled when she laughed. The way her hair fell across her face. The way her smile lit up the room.
I started to feel things. Things I had never felt before.
When she sat with other boys at lunch, I would get angry. Jealous. My fists would clench. My jaw would tighten.
When she laughed at something they said, I would feel a burning in my chest.
When she touched their arms or shoulders, I would want to pull her away.
I did not understand it at first. I did not know why I felt this way.
But then I realized.
I was falling for her.
---
The Jealousy
It happened one afternoon in the cafeteria.
Den was sitting at a table with some of the other athletes. They were laughing. Talking. Having fun.
I walked over. I saw one of the boys, Marcus, sitting too close to her. His hand was on her shoulder. He was leaning in. Whispering something in her ear.
My blood boiled.
I walked to the table. I grabbed Marcus by the collar. I pulled him up.
"What do you think you are doing?" I shouted.
Marcus's eyes went wide. "Race, what are you doing? I was just talking to Den."
"Den does not want to talk to you," I said. "Get away from her."
The cafeteria went silent. Everyone was staring at me.
Marcus held up his hands. "Okay, man. Calm down. I was not doing anything wrong."
"Just stay away from her," I said.
I let go of his collar. He stumbled back. He walked away quickly.
I turned to Den. She was staring at me. Her face was pale.
"Race," she said. "What was that?"
I did not answer. I grabbed her hand. I pulled her out of the cafeteria.
---
The Confrontation
I led Den to the courtyard. It was empty. Quiet.
"Race," she said again. "What is wrong with you? Why did you do that?"
I could not look at her. I was ashamed. Embarrassed.
"I don't know," I said. "I just... I did not like seeing him so close to you."
Den was confused. "He was just talking to me. He was not doing anything wrong."
"I know," I said. "But I could not help it. I saw his hand on your shoulder. I saw him leaning in. And I just... lost control."
Den was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "Why do you care so much? Why does it bother you?"
I looked at her. Her eyes were searching mine. Trying to understand.
"I don't know," I said again. But I was lying. I did know.
Den stepped closer to me. "Race, tell me the truth. Why did you do that?"
I took a deep breath. I could not keep hiding it.
"Because I was jealous," I said.
Den's eyes went wide. "Jealous? Of what?"
"Of him," I said. "Of anyone who gets too close to you."
Den stared at me. Her mouth was open. She was speechless.
"I know it's crazy," I continued. "I know you are just my friend. I know I have no right to feel this way. But I cannot help it."
Den was silent for a long moment. Then she spoke.
"Race," she said softly. "I feel it too."
I looked at her. "What?"
"I feel it too," she repeated. "The jealousy. The anger. When I see you with other girls."
I stared at her. "You do?"
"Yes," she said. "I have been feeling it for weeks. I just did not know how to tell you."
I stepped closer to her. My heart was pounding.
"Den," I said. "I think I am falling in love with you."
Her eyes filled with tears. "I think I am falling in love with you too."
---
The Kiss
We stood there. In the empty courtyard. Two people who had been hiding from the world.
I reached out. I touched her face. Her skin was soft under my fingers.
"Den," I whispered. "Can I kiss you?"
She nodded. Her eyes were full of emotion.
"Yes," she said. "Please."
I leaned in. I pressed my lips to hers.
It was soft at first. Gentle. Tentative. Then it grew deeper. More passionate.
She wrapped her arms around my neck. I pulled her closer.
We kissed like we had been waiting our whole lives for this moment.
And maybe we had.
---
The Aftermath
When we finally pulled apart, we were both breathless.
"Wow," Den said. "That was..."
"Amazing," I finished.
She smiled. "Yes. Amazing."
I looked at her. "What happens now?"
Den thought for a moment. "We keep our secret. We continue as we have been. But now... we know."
"Know what?"
"That we have each other," she said. "That we are not alone."
I took her hand. I squeezed it.
"Together," I said. "Always."
"Always," she repeated.
---
The Conversation
That night, we sat in our room. Lily was asleep. The world was quiet.
"Den," I said. "I need to tell you something."
She looked at me. "What is it?"
"I always knew you were different," I said. "From the very beginning. You were too emotional. Too caring. You felt things deeply. You never acted like the other boys."
Den smiled. "You knew?"
"I suspected," I said. "But I did not want to assume. I did not want to push you."
"I am glad you did not push," she said. "I was not ready to tell you. Not then."
"And now?" I asked. "Are you ready now?"
She nodded. "I am ready. I am ready to be myself. With you."
I reached for her hand. "I am glad. Because I love you, Den. I love you just the way you are."
Den's eyes filled with tears. "I love you too, Race. I love you so much."
We kissed again. Softly. Tenderly.
It was the beginning of something new. Something beautiful.
Something neither of us had ever expected.
---
The Future
I did not know what the future held. I did not know if we would ever be able to live openly. I did not know if we would ever be free.
But I knew one thing.
I had Den. I had Lily. I had a family.
And that was all that mattered.
