The lock on my bedroom door clicked shut, but it did absolutely nothing to block out the suffocating weight of the boardroom ultimatum.
I leaned my back against the dark wood, sliding down until my knees hit the plush carpet. The room was completely dark, illuminated only by the pale moonlight cutting through the sheer curtains. My phone was face-down on the nightstand, buzzing relentlessly with frantic notifications from Chloe and a dozen automated stock alerts. I ignored them all.
*Next month.*
The words spun through my mind like a recurring nightmare. My father and Victoria weren’t asking for a partnership; they were demanding a blood sacrifice to satisfy their lenders. If I signed that amendment, I would be legally tied to Julian before my graduation cap even hit the air. If I didn’t, my family’s entire shipping network would be left exposed, stripped of the Sterling encryption keys by noon tomorrow. Checkmate.
*Knock. Knock.*
The sudden, sharp sound against my door made my heart leap directly into my throat.
"Sierra," a low, muffled voice rasped from the hallway. "Open the door."
It was Julian. His voice didn't carry a single trace of his usual playful lilt; it sounded raw, frayed, and dangerously tightly coiled.
I stood up, smoothing down my oversized silk shirt, and unlocked the door. I only pulled it open a few inches, intending to tell him to leave, but Julian didn’t wait for an invitation. He put his hand flat against the wood, forcing it open, and stepped directly into my room.
The moment the door clicked shut behind him, the space felt entirely too small. He had shed his uniform blazer and tie. His white shirt was completely unbuttoned at the top, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the sharp lines of his forearms. He looked erratic, furious, and devastatingly handsome in the dim moonlight.
"What are you doing in here, Julian?" I demanded, my voice shaking as I backed away from him. "If our parents see you—"
"Our parents are currently downing martinis in the study, celebrating the fact that they think they’ve successfully cornered us," Julian snapped, his blue eyes flashing with a dangerous, volatile light. He paced across the rug like a caged animal before stopping right in front of me. "Are you really going to do it? Are you actually going to sign that piece of garbage paper tomorrow morning?"
"Do I have a choice?" I shot back, the frustration boiling over as I crossed my arms tightly over my chest. "You heard your mother! If we don't sign, she pulls the tech infrastructure. My family’s logistics network collapses by the weekend. I can't just let fifty years of my grandfather's legacy burn to the ground because I'm scared of a legal document!"
"This isn't just a legal document, Sierra! It’s your life!" Julian took a step closer, his chest heaving as he stared down at me. "You’ve spent your entire life being a perfect little corporate soldier, doing exactly what your father commands. But this is a marriage. It’s permanent."
"Don't talk to me about being a corporate soldier!" I hissed, stepping right into his face, my temper completely flaring. "You're the one who told me last night that we were a team! You're the one who kissed me in the kitchen and told me you weren't playing games anymore! Was that all just a lie? Was that just your way of making sure I stayed compliant so your family's secondary distribution lines stayed safe?"
The accusation hung heavily in the air, toxic and sharp.
Julian froze. For a fraction of a second, a look of pure, unadulterated hurt flashed across his features, instantly replaced by a terrifyingly dark, quiet fury.
"Is that really what you think of me?" he whispered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register that sent a shiver straight down my spine.
Before I could even think of an answer, he closed the remaining distance between us. His hand shot out, his fingers tangling roughly but securely into the loose, braided tendrils of my hair, tilting my face upward. His other hand slammed against the wall right next to my head, effectively pinning me to the spot.
The physical contact was blindingly hot. The anger between us didn't dissipate; it mutated, transforming into a thick, suffocating wave of pure attraction.
"Look at me," Julian commanded fiercely, his breath ghosting over my lips. "Look into my eyes and tell me that what happened last night felt like a corporate transaction to you. Tell me that when I held you against that counter, you felt like a business asset."
I couldn't breathe. My heart was pounding so violently I was certain it was tearing through my chest. I wanted to scream at him, to push him away, to maintain the bitter, love-hate armor that had protected me for weeks. But staring into his dark blue eyes, seeing the absolute desperation and raw possessiveness burning behind them, my defenses crumbled into absolute dust.
"I don't know what we are, Julian," I breathed, my voice suddenly losing all its venom, reduced to a vulnerable whisper. "Everything is moving too fast. The board, the contracts, the press... you."
Julian’s gaze dropped to my lips, his grip on my hair softening into a lingering, electric caress. The fierce predator vanished, replaced by the sneaky, devastatingly flirty stepbrother who knew exactly how to dismantle my sanity. He leaned down, his lips brushing softly against the shell of my ear, making me gasp.
"Then forget about the board," he murmured, his voice a low, seductive purr against my skin. His thumb slowly traced the sharp line of my jaw, his touch leaving a trail of fire in its wake. "Forget about the contracts for just five minutes, CeeCee. Let them think they've won the war out there. In here... it's just you and me. And I dare you to tell me you don't want this just as badly as I do."
He pulled back just enough to look at me, a slow, wicked, lopsided smirk playing on his lips despite the chaos of the day. It was an infuriatingly arrogant look, a direct challenge. He was giving me an out, a chance to push him away and play the cold billionairess.
Instead, I reached up, my fingers gripping the front of his unbuttoned white shirt, and pulled him down into my lips.
The argument died instantly, consumed by a fierce, demanding kiss that tasted like ash and embers. Julian let out a low growl against my mouth, his arm wrapping securely around my waist and lifting me slightly off the floor, pressing me hard against the wall, he slowly reached into my skirt slowly strokingmy clitoris....ohhhh Julian..fuck ..he continued. It was a chaotic, beautiful contradiction—fighting each other with words one second, and clinging to each other for survival the next.
We were completely trapped by the corporate traps our parents had built around us, and tomorrow would bring the fight of our lives. But tonight, hidden away in the dark, sneaky corners of the mansion, the slow-burn war between us had officially turned into an entirely different kind of battle—one that neither of us had any intention of losing.
