Chapter Six: The Fracture

843 Words
The next morning, the hospital light is softer. It doesn’t stab. It seeps. I wake before Daniel this time. He’s slouched in the chair beside my bed, arms crossed, chin dipped toward his chest. Even asleep, he looks alert. Like he’d wake at the slightest shift in my breathing. For a moment, I just watch him. Steady.Safe.My anchor. The door opens quietly.I expect a nurse. It isn’t.The air changes before I even fully turn my head.Adrian Vale stands in the doorway. He doesn’t step in immediately. Just stands there, tall, composed, contained in that dark coat like armor. The sterile hospital light strips him of the stage’s shadows, but it doesn’t make him softer. If anything, he looks sharper. Daniel stirs, sensing movement. His eyes open, immediately alert. There’s a split second where the two men simply look at each other.Measured.Controlled.
“I didn’t realize this was visiting hours for an audience,” Daniel says calmly, rising to his feet.Adrian’s gaze flicks to me first. Not Daniel.Me. “I needed to confirm something,” Adrian replies. His voice is even. Too even. Daniel doesn’t move aside. “She needs rest.” “I’m aware of what she needs.” The temperature in the room drops five degrees. “Daniel,” I say softly. He glances at me, hesitation flickering across his face. I give him a small nod. It’s okay. Reluctantly, he steps back but he doesn’t leave. He just shifts closer to the window, arms folding again. Watching.Adrian finally walks in.Each step is unhurried. Controlled. He stops at the foot of my bed. Up close, I can see it now. The thing Daniel noticed last night. Not indifference. Something far more volatile. “You collapsed,” Adrian says. “Yes.” “That’s not something you do.” A strange, brittle laugh slips out of me. “I’ll try to schedule it better next time.” His jaw tightens. “This isn’t amusing.” “No,” I agree quietly. “It isn’t.” Silence stretches between us. Not empty. Charged. “You were terrified when I approached you” he says finally. It isn’t a question. Daniel shifts at the window.I swallow. “It should not concern you .” “That wasn’t my question.” Of course it wasn’t. He steps closer to the side of the bed now. Close enough that I can see the faint line between his brows. Close enough that I can feel the awareness in my pulse again. “You were fine,” he continues. “Until I touched you.” Daniel’s voice cuts in, calm but firm. “That’s enough.” Adrian doesn’t look at him. He’s watching me the way he watches a stage before stepping onto it. Reading it. Calculating. “Did I remind you of someone?” he asks. There it is.The fracture. I feel it before I answer. That old memory stirring like smoke in my lungs. A hand that wasn’t gentle. A voice that didn’t ask. A touch that took.My fingers curl into the sheets. “That’s not your concern,” I say. “It is if I’m working with you.” Daniel steps forward now. “She doesn’t owe you an explanation.” Adrian’s gaze finally shifts to him. Cold. “And you are?” “Someone who was there when she couldn’t breathe.” The silence that follows is razor-thin. Adrian’s eyes darken, not with jealousy this time. With something else. Recognition. He looks back at me, and for the first time since I’ve known him, there’s no arrogance in his posture. No sharp edge of dominance.Just a question he doesn’t know how to ask. “Did I hurt you?” he says, quieter. Not physically. But the memory of his hand at my wrist.
The way my body chose terror before logic. The humiliation of unraveling in front of him. “You startled me,” I answer carefully. “That’s all.” He studies my face, searching for the lie. Maybe there is one.Because it wasn’t just being startled. It was being seen. Daniel places a hand lightly on the rail of the bed near me. Not touching me. Just there.Adrian notices that too. His gaze drops briefly to Daniel’s hand.
Then back to me. “Rest,” Adrian says at last. But the word sounds different when he says it.Not dismissive. Not commanding. Almost restrained. He steps back, composure sliding back into place like a mask returning to its rightful position. At the door, he pauses. “I don’t like not understanding what’s happening in front of me,” he says without turning around. I meet his reflection in the glass of the window. “You’re not entitled to understand everything.” Then he leaves. The room exhales. Daniel looks at me. “He’s not safe.” I stare at the closed door. “No,” I whisper. But I’m not sure which of them I’m answering about.Because Adrian didn’t look angry today. He looked unsettled. And something tells me that’s far more dangerous. “And what business was he talking about?” I looked at Daniel expecting an answer from him.
