Alexa Martin
MONDAY came very quickly. My two days of weekends didn't seem very pleasant. After the night with Eli last saturday, I didn't hear from him again. My boss, as promised, gave me the half that was bidded on me. Which is five hundred thousand dollars. That was more than enough for me.
Five hundred thousand dollars isn't something small. It's a huge deduction. Which means I only need to save two million dollars. Still far away. But still, it helped me a lot. I still have the hundred thousand cheque that Eli gave me but, I feel bad using it.
No one really knows what I do during weekends. Every weekdays, I try my best to look plain. I don't wear too much make up. Just liptint and face powder. I always tie my hair into ponytail and let my small bangs cover my face. I also wear a thick reading glasses. I don't really need those, but I just thought it will help me look less attractive.
I try my best to avoid attentions. I wear dark and plain clothings so no one would talk to me. I always wear long sleeves and pants. I dont wear heels. I always wear flat shoes during weekdays.
For these past three years, no one ever flirted with me on work. And so, I think this idea works. You might be wondering why I'm doing these. There's no reasons actually. I just dont want my coworkers to know what I do on pub. I also hate too much attention. And... I hate men.
As soon as I arrive on my work place, I quickly head to my area. Everyone is busy and as usual, I'm ignored.
Something feels different today though. Everyone has been talking about our CEO leaving. I know Mr. Faulkner is old, but I never thought he'd have to leave early.
"I heard our new CEO is young. It's Mr.Faulkner's grandson." Suzy, our flirty manager, said.
Suzy is known for her beauty here in our company. There's been rumors that she's going to be promoted. I wasn't quite sure what position, but I think she's aiming to be a secretary.
"Mr. Faulkner has a grandson?" Alicia asked. Alicia is Suzy's bestfriend. They have been together for so long now. The two of them has some reputation in our company.
I never liked them and I always avoid them.
Whatever they're talking about piqued my interests. Mr.Faulkner is quite mysterious. I never knew he has a grandson. He isn't really open about his family. He never spoke about them.
"Yes, I heard about it. I'm very certain that Mr. Faulkner has a grandson."
"This is too sudden, do you think you can still be promoted?" Alicia asked.
"Why not? If he's young, he's gullible. I can do my charm on him and I'll be promoted in no time." Suzy proudly said.
I fought the urge to roll my eyes on her. I hate her. She doesn't deserve any promotion at all. If anything, I deserve it. All those ideas and projects are mine. I'm the one who worked hard for her projects. If only she doesn't have the power to fire me then I wouldn't slave myself for her.
Patience, Alexa. Patience. This is for your father.
The thought of her getting promoted instead of me is making me upset. Suzy glanced at me and she smirked clearly amused. She knows how much I hate her. Goodness, I should expose her for her schemes.
Just as I was about to explode in anger, heavy footsteps filled the room. I turned to face the entrance. As soon as I saw who it was, all of my colors drained. If it was possible to turn white, then I must've been as white as a paper.
Elijah!
What is he doing here!?
He looked at us unenthusiastic and just headed to his office without a greeting. Everyone was silent for a moment. He didn't seem interested on getting to know us or that if we should greet him. In fact, he looked terrifying. As if he could destroy anyone blocking his path.
He didn't saw me.
I breathed in relief. But soon I realized the inevitable outcome. What happens if he knows I work here? Last saturday didn't seem pleasant at all.
I brushed my fingers on hair and then roughly grabbed it. I let my head hit my table as I mourned silently for my future.
"Alexa, are you done with the audit that I gave you? It's due this week." Suzy asked. She's looking down on me. I'm sitting down, and so I had to look up on her.
"It's impossible to finish that within five days. I'm working on some things too." I hissed.
"Then finish it quickly!"
"You don't get it, Suzy. I'm assigned on auditing on some recent projects. It's about our new branch. I can't possibly delay that." I retorted.
Suzy glowered at me. I swear, I heard her grind her teeth. If murder isn't a crime, she probably killed me a few seconds ago. Then again, I would've killed her long ago too.
"Don't forget your position her, Ms. Martin. I could fire you here and now. Don't forget what authority I have." She threatened in whispers. "I expect it done before friday." she said and left me without hearing my reply.
If I didn't need this job, I would gladly file my resignation letter.
TIME passed by quickly. It's almost done for working time. I was too occupied with my work that I have forgotten to eat. I cleared my table and turned off my computer. It's getting dark already.
I rushed to the elevator and quickly pressed the ground floor button. The elevator is taking it's time to close and I needed to go to the pub. I needed to talk to Cheska.
Before the elevator closed, someone rushed in. Just as I thought that my day couldn't get any worse. He appeared and proved that my day can be a hundred times worst.
"I see you have different taste of fashion during work days." Eli said.
I didn't dare to look at his face. I stared at his reflection on the walls of the elevator. He wasn't looking at me either. He was just looking straight.
I noticed how stressed he looks like. His tie is loose and few of his buttons are undone. There's a small dark shades under his eye bags. As if, he couldn't sleep well. Though, he didn't look well, he is still... Charming.
"Alexa."
His eyes met mine on the reflection of the elevator walls. I breathed in lots of air. I could feel my heartbeat beating fast and I wonder if he could actually hear it.
"Eli, what are you doing here?" I asked.
His brows met with confusion. "What do you mean?"
"You can't be working here! I refuse to believe such coincidence." I said.
His lips slowly quirked to a smile. He looked like a little devil with a devious plan.
"I don't work here." He said.
It was now my turn to get confused. I turned to look at him. He was just smiling, he's amused by this.
"If you're not working here, then what are you doing here!?"
He chuckled. He bent his head and leaned closer to my ear. "I own this place now. Don't you get it? I'm your boss now."
I knew fate was playing with me. If it was hundred times worst earlier, now it just become a thousand more.
