Chapter 3

Understood. The question wasn't a request for confirmation; it was an assertion of power. The platinum ring on the vanity seemed to leach all the warmth from the room, leaving behind a piercing chill. Selena stared at the object, then shifted her gaze to Callum’s placid eyes. "Perfectly clear," Selena replied, her voice steadier than she expected, as hard as steel forged in the fire of desperation. "I am your newest property. I must be polished and maintained to keep up appearances in public." For a fleeting second, a flicker of unreadable emotion crossed Callum’s face—surprise, perhaps, or a deeper anger—but it vanished as swiftly as it came. "As long as you understand your role," he said coldly, turning away. "Ophelia will escort you to the dining room in one hour. Don't be late. My mother despises tardiness." Without another word, he strode out, leaving Selena alone with the deafening silence and a ring that felt heavier than handcuffs. The quiet didn't last long. The door opened almost soundlessly, and a woman with tightly coiled gray hair and a stiff black uniform stood in the doorway. Her posture was straight as a ruler, and her eyes, the gray of an impending storm, assessed her with an efficient, emotionless gaze. "Mrs. Attwood," she said, her voice crisp as a dried leaf. "I am Ophelia Graves, the head housekeeper. I am here to ensure you are ready for dinner and show you to your room." "My room?" Selena frowned. "Isn't this my room already?" "This is the guest room in the east wing, Madam," Ophelia clarified, without a hint of surprise. "Mr. Attwood has prepared the master suite in the west wing for the two of you." Of course. The charade had to start now, right here within these walls. Selena picked up the platinum ring. It felt cold in her palm. With a reluctant gesture, she slipped it onto her ring finger. It was a perfect fit. As if the ring had been made for her, specifically to mark her as Attwood property. Ophelia led her down a long, silent corridor. The walls were lined with dark wood paneling polished to a sheen, reflecting their shadows like ghosts. Portraits of Attwood ancestors watched her from their gilded frames, their eyes seeming to follow her with silent reproach. This house had no warmth; it possessed the cold grandeur of a mausoleum. They stopped before a set of double oak doors. Ophelia opened them, revealing a suite even more luxurious than the previous room. There was a small sitting room with a marble fireplace, and beyond that, a vast bedroom featuring a magnificent bed that faced gigantic windows. However, what caught Selena's attention was another door on the opposite side of the bedroom. "This is your room, Madam. Mr. Attwood's room is through that connecting door," Ophelia stated, as if reading her mind. "Your dress for dinner has been laid out in the wardrobe." Just as Ophelia was about to leave, Callum emerged from the connecting door. He had changed, wearing a crisp white shirt and black trousers, his tie already removed. His eyes went straight to Selena, then to Ophelia. "Thank you, Ophelia. You may go," he said. The housekeeper nodded obediently and disappeared, closing the main door behind her and leaving a tense silence. "So, this is our setup?" Selena asked, crossing her arms over her chest. The ring on her finger felt foreign and heavy. "It is the most sensible arrangement," Callum replied, walking toward a small bar in the corner of the sitting room and pouring himself a glass of whiskey. Ice clinked against the crystal glass, the only sound in the room. "In front of my mother and the staff, we are husband and wife. This door," he indicated the connecting door with his chin, "will always be unlocked. But when we are alone, like now, assume there is a steel wall there. You have your world, and I have mine." "A transaction," Selena hissed. "You’ve made that perfectly clear." "I’m glad we see eye to eye." He downed the whiskey in a single gulp, his movement sharp and impatient. The anger Selena had been suppressing since their first meeting began to boil. "We don't see eye to eye on anything, Callum. You forced me into this lie. You are holding me here against my will, accusing me of something I never did." "Don't start this again, Selena," he growled, setting his glass down hard on the table. "No! I am going to start it!" Her voice trembled with overflowing emotion. "I didn't kill Adrian! I don’t know how else to say it so you’ll believe me. He was my friend! He—" "SILENCE!" Callum’s roar echoed through the room, laden with raw pain and uncontrolled fury. He lunged toward Selena, gripping her arm, his eyes flashing wildly. For the first time, Selena didn't see a cold CEO, but a broken man. "You have no right to speak his name in this house! You have no right to talk about him as if you knew him!" "I did know him!" Selena cried out, hot tears beginning to burn her eyes. "And I know he never would have wanted this! He never would have wanted you to torment me like this!" "You know nothing!" His grip tightened. His face was inches from hers, his breath smelling of whiskey and sorrow. "You know what I see every time I close my eyes? I see him lying there on the cold floor. Alone. And you were there. You were the last person with him." "It wasn't how you think!" "Then what was it like?" he demanded, his voice hoarse. "Tell me, Selena. Tell me another pretty lie. Tell me how my brother, the heir to all of this, ended up dead in the squalid apartment of a woman who has nothing." Each word was a knife twisting into her. The pain in her arm was nothing compared to the ache in her heart. "I don't know," she whispered desperately. "I swear, I don't know what happened." Callum released her roughly, as if touching her had burned him. He stepped back, rubbing his face with a trembling hand. "Of course you don't know." He laughed, a hollow, terrible sound. "Follow me." He walked out of the suite, not waiting to see if Selena followed. Hesitantly, she trailed after him. He led her down another corridor, stopping before a sturdy mahogany door secured with an elaborate brass lock. "See this door?" he said, his voice back to being cold and controlled, yet with a tremor beneath it. "This is Adrian’s study. All of his things are inside. His books, his music, all his unfinished plans. Everything that remains of him is behind this door." He stared at Selena, his eyes a chasm of grief and hatred. "I locked it the day he died. And no one will ever open it again. Especially not you. His memory is mine to protect, not to be defiled by his killer. Stay away from this place. Stay away from his memory." With that final warning, he turned and walked away, leaving Selena alone in the dimly lit corridor, before the door that served as a shrine to the man she was accused of murdering. Back in her room, the feeling of isolation intensified. Selena stood before the large wardrobe, where an emerald evening gown that surely cost more than a year's rent for her old apartment hung neatly. Beside it, in a clear garment bag, hung the suit and jacket she had worn that night—the night her world collapsed. The clothing had been professionally cleaned, without a trace of blood or any remnant of the nightmare. Her hands trembled as she unzipped the bag. She had to know. There had to be something. Any clue. She pulled out her worn denim jacket. It felt familiar in her hands, the only piece of her old life left. Holding her breath, she began to search every pocket. The outer pockets were empty. The inner pockets, also empty. Her hope faded. Of course they would have checked them. She was about to give up when her fingers brushed against something odd in the lining of the inner pocket. A small, stiff lump, as if something had been tucked into the seam. Her heart pounding, she ripped a small stitch with her nail. A small, neatly folded slip of paper fell into her palm. The paper was worn and slightly crumpled. Her hands shook so violently she could barely unfold it. It wasn't a note. Not a message. Upon it, only three letters were written in stark black ink. A. A. L.
