Chapter 2: Dangerous Tension

1253 Words
Elias barely slept. Every time he closed his eyes, he heard Damon’s voice echoing through the ballroom again. I reject you. The words should have shattered the bond completely. Instead, the connection between them remained alive beneath Elias’s skin like a fever that refused to break. By morning, rain still covered Silvercrest City in dark clouds. Soft thunder rolled outside while pale gray light filtered through the giant windows of the penthouse. Elias sat quietly on the edge of the massive guest bed, staring blankly at the unfamiliar room around him. Everything here screamed wealth. Black marble floors. Designer furniture. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. Even the sheets smelled expensive. And underneath it all— Damon. Cedarwood. Smoke. Alpha. The scent clung to every corner of the penthouse, making Elias painfully aware that he was trapped inside another wolf’s territory. His mate’s territory. The thought made irritation twist sharply in his chest. Mate. No. Rejected mate. Elias stood quickly and walked toward the bathroom mirror. He looked awful. His hazel eyes were tired, his hair messy from sleep, and faint shadows lingered beneath his eyes. “You’re pathetic,” he muttered to himself. He splashed cold water across his face. This wasn’t the time to fall apart. His family depended on him staying strong. If Marcus Voss truly decided to target the Harts, they wouldn’t survive it. That thought alone forced Elias to straighten. No matter how much this situation hurt… He had to endure it. Even if living beside Damon Voss felt like slowly walking into a fire. An hour later, Elias stepped carefully into the penthouse kitchen wearing dark jeans and an oversized black hoodie one of the servants had left for him. The kitchen was enormous and painfully modern, filled with polished marble counters and silver appliances that probably cost more than his family’s apartment. Elias quietly made coffee, grateful for the silence. Until— “You’re awake.” His entire body tensed instantly. Damon stood near the hallway entrance. His dark hair was damp from the shower, sleeves rolled to his elbows, exposing muscular forearms marked with faint scars. Without the formal suit from last night, he somehow looked even more dangerous. More real. Gray eyes swept slowly over Elias. The bond pulsed immediately. Heat crawled beneath Elias’s skin. Annoying. Damon walked toward the kitchen calmly, but Elias noticed the slight tension in his shoulders. Like he felt it too. “You’re staring,” Elias muttered before taking a sip of coffee. Damon’s mouth twitched slightly. “You smell nervous.” Elias glared at him instantly. “And you smell arrogant.” For one brief second, silence hung between them. Then unexpectedly— Damon laughed softly. The sound caught Elias completely off guard. It changed Damon’s face entirely. Made him look younger. Less cold. The moment disappeared quickly. Damon moved past him toward the counter. “I have meetings this afternoon,” he said calmly. “The council expects us at tonight’s gala event.” Elias nearly choked on his coffee. “Another one?” “Welcome to pack politics.” “I’d rather die.” Damon glanced sideways at him. “Don’t say things like that.” The sharpness in his voice surprised Elias. Their eyes met briefly. And suddenly the atmosphere shifted again. Heavy. Warm. Dangerously intimate. Elias looked away first. He hated how intense the bond felt whenever Damon focused completely on him. Like the Alpha could see through him. Damon leaned against the marble counter quietly. “You didn’t tell me your family runs a clinic.” Elias blinked in surprise. “How do you know that?” “I looked into you.” “Of course you did,” Elias muttered. Damon ignored the sarcasm. “The lower district clinic treats wolves who can’t afford Silvercrest medical fees.” Elias stiffened slightly. “Someone has to.” Damon studied him carefully. “You work there?” “Since I was sixteen.” “Why?” Elias frowned. “What kind of question is that?” “Most omegas from weaker families try marrying into better status.” Elias laughed bitterly. “Well, sorry to disappoint you, Alpha.” Damon’s expression darkened slightly. “That wasn’t an insult.” “Sure.” Elias turned away toward the window. Rain streaked down the glass while traffic lights flickered below across the city. “I didn’t want some rich Alpha taking care of me,” he said quietly after a moment. “I wanted my own life.” Silence. Then Damon asked softly— “And now?” Elias swallowed. Now? Now his future belonged to a contract he never wanted. Now his body reacted every time Damon got too close. Now the most powerful wolf in Silvercrest could ruin his life with a single command. “…Now I’m stuck here,” Elias answered honestly. Something unreadable crossed Damon’s face. Before either could say another word, the penthouse elevator doors opened. A tall elegant woman stepped inside carrying a digital tablet. Silver hair. Sharp eyes. Perfect posture. Selene Vale. Council advisor. Elias immediately recognized her from the gala. “Alpha Damon,” Selene greeted calmly. Damon straightened instantly. “Selene.” Her gaze shifted toward Elias. “Mr. Hart.” Elias nodded cautiously. Selene walked deeper into the penthouse, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. “The council has accelerated tonight’s ceremony.” Damon frowned. “Why?” “Rumors are spreading about the incomplete rejection.” Elias’s stomach tightened. The incomplete rejection. Even hearing those words sounded wrong. Selene placed the tablet onto the counter. “Several Alpha families are already questioning the stability of Silvercrest leadership.” Damon’s expression became dangerous instantly. “Let them question.” Selene met his eyes calmly. “You know how quickly weakness becomes political opportunity.” Silence filled the room. Elias suddenly realized something important. Damon wasn’t just trapped because of the bond. He was trapped because everyone around him expected perfection. Every move he made was watched. Judged. Controlled. For the first time since meeting him… Elias almost felt sorry for him. Almost. Selene continued speaking. “There’s another issue.” Damon sighed heavily. “What now?” “The council physician examined the bond results from last night.” Elias frowned slightly. “What does that mean?” Selene hesitated. Which immediately made Elias nervous. “The bond between you two is strengthening instead of weakening.” The room went silent. Elias felt his pulse quicken instantly. “That’s impossible,” Damon said sharply. “Not impossible,” Selene corrected calmly. “Rare.” Damon stepped forward. “Explain.” Selene’s silver eyes moved carefully between them. “The rejection failed because the bond may be deeper than ordinary mate pairing.” A strange chill crawled down Elias’s spine. “What exactly are you saying?” Selene hesitated again. Then finally answered— “The council believes the Moon Goddess herself may have marked this union.” Silence crashed heavily across the penthouse. Elias stared at her. Damon looked furious. “That’s ridiculous.” “Perhaps,” Selene said quietly. “But until we know for certain, both of you remain under observation.” Elias suddenly felt suffocated. This was getting worse. Much worse. Damon ran a frustrated hand through his dark hair before turning toward the window. For the first time since Elias met him… The future Alpha of Silvercrest looked genuinely unsettled. And somehow, that frightened Elias more than Damon’s anger ever could.
