Everything seemed dark with a cold devoid of light, color, and sound. I rose and walked through a dark path so heavy I could feel it pressing against my body. All I could see were my hands. I kept on walking, not feeling anything. Then, I saw a great white wolf with black eyes. Its white fur was the same shade as my platinum-blonde hair.
I gasped loudly at its magnificence. The beauty of it drew me and I came close to see that it was a stone carving.
I blinked at the unfamiliar sight and the carving came alive. The stone face stared down at me as if beckoning to me.
The walls around the wolf began to crumble. I turned around and ran to escape huge blocks falling from the roof.
The walls were coming down around me in fire and dust. I wanted to scream but had no air as I ran between the great columns. I was knocked from my feet as the walls closed in and the earth trembled.
My heart beat faster as the fog started to clear. Before me was a sculptor, working on a piece of stone. I looked closely to see that the stone was a statue of me. But not quite. Its eyes were stuck in wolf form. Just like the great white wolf I just saw.
I heard the roar of a hungry beast emanate from the statue, but I couldn’t move. The sculptor drew his hammer.
“No.” I groaned, knowing what he was about to do.
“No!” I cried out. I wanted to rush and stop him, but some force held me down as the sculptor brought his hammer down with a mighty blow and shattered the stone image.
“Wake, Nimue.” A quiet voice whispered in my head. I rose with a start, looking around wildly. Sweat drenched my back while I struggled to make sense of my surroundings.
I was in my room, and it was morning. It was all a nightmare.
The horror of the dream soaked me up, and I felt cold pressure surrounding me and sinking me. I didn’t realize I was crying. I shook my head to clear the gruesome image.
A knock sounded on my bedroom door, pulling me out of my misery. I opened it to find a bunch of Omega wolves standing there with boxes in their hands. I didn’t understand what was going on.
“What’s this?” I asked.
“The alpha has requested we present these to you. We come bearing gifts for the moon goddess.” One wolf replied. The opulence and extravagance of it all took aback me. I opened the door wider and let them in. Leah stood at the bottom of the stairs, glaring at the cavalry streaming into my room. I didn’t pay her any attention and shut the door.
“I am Dalia,” the wolf said. “And this is Opah.” She pointed to another female wolf who graced me with a kind smile. The cogs in my mind whirred, making me wonder how genuine the smile was. It never escaped my notice that most of the pack members hated me.
“These are my assistants, and they’ll help in getting you ready for the victory procession.” I looked at the other wolves, who had busied themselves with laying their gifts.
“You should take a shower and let’s get started.” Opah advised.
“Sure.” I left them on it and went into the bathroom. The dream still weighed heavily on my mind.
I took some time to wash my hair, massaging my scalp in the process and loosening the tight knots that were clogged around it.
I finished quickly and wrapped the towel over my body, stepping out into the bathroom.
“Here.” Dalia laid out new underwear on the bed and I quickly donned them feeling a bit uncomfortable under their stares. She presented me with scented oil and instructed me to rub it into my skin. I did as I was told. No questions asked.
Opah whisked me into a chair and I held on to my towel to avoid flashing them with my barely covered body.
She fingered the ends of my hair and sighed dreamily. I caught her eyes in the mirror and saw her kind smile still in place. I decided the smile was genuine, and I gave her one in return.
“You have the most beautiful hair.” She complimented. I almost snorted at her words. My blonde locks were wild and could never be put in place.
“Thank you.” I still replied out of courtesy.
Opah went to work on my hair while Dalia attended to my face. The other wolves took my hands and feet and got to work on them.
I felt my body being tugged in a thousand places, but I remained still and let them be.
Soon, they were done. I stilled my breath at the sight that greeted me in the mirror. I could hardly recognize myself. I looked... beautiful.
“Wow.” I whispered. My hair was behaving and sitting in place.
“Come,” Opah called. I looked at her to see her holding up a white dress that was pure lace. It was exquisite. I’ve never seen anything like it.
“It’s beautiful.” I gushed. Opah smiled kindly again and beckoned to me. I went to her, pulling the towel off my body. She helped me into the dress and zipped me up.
“It was made for you,” Opah said. I turned back to the mirror again to see the dress hugging me in all the right places. I couldn’t believe I was the same girl. I looked powerful, like a goddess. Dalia presented me with a pair of silver Jimmy Choos heels to complete the look.
“The feast is waiting.” She reminded me. I nodded and allowed them to lead me out of the house. My family stood by the front door, waiting. Their scowls mirrored each other. Dad came closer and engulfed me in a hug. My heart swelled at his public display of affection.
“You don’t deserve to play this role,” he whispered. “Leah would have been a more suitable option.” My confidence evaporated at his words and I felt myself shrink further away from humanity.
Tears burned my eyes, and I struggled to hold them in. I was wary of letting Grace and Leah hug me, but my father’s words had taken the fight out of me. Leah touched my dress delicately, envy blazing in her eyes.
Dalia ushered me out, leaving the rest of my family to follow. I walked out onto the porch and Dalia halted me.
“Wait! You can’t step onto the bare ground. The goddess’s place is in the heavens. It is a bad omen if you touch the ground.” She declared.
“Oh.” I withdrew my leg and stood on the wooden panel laid out on the floor of the porch.
“Your carriage is here.” Beta wolves approached, carrying a throne with them. It had the Luna’s symbol on it and I shivered at the sight. My body was drawn to the sight as though we shared some sort of connection. They lifted me onto the chair and proceeded to carry me into the square.
Everyone was present, and the procession began. Nico sat in his high chair with his enforcers holding him up. He sighted me and smiled. His eyes roamed over my appearance and I could feel the appreciation dancing in them. I blushed under his stare and glanced away. He laughed softly and the husky sound rolled over me. He gestured for the betas carrying me to precede him.
The procession went into full swing and the women sang in our ancient tongues. I felt high from the beauty of it all. My eyes swept over the crowd. I didn’t miss it when Opah smiled at me again. This time, there was no kindness in her eyes. The smile was pure evil. My eyes widened as she stuck out her foot in front of one beta. The throne I was on tipped to the side and I lost my balance. I fell out of my chair and went sprawling all over the floor.
