Make up for it?
I'm not one to easily miss the nuances, and Leonard's words held layers I quickly deciphered.
"Mr. Gabriel, I am very grateful for your help when I was in trouble, so I can pretend not to know about the previous manipulation."
As I spoke, I noticed Leonard looking up at me, surprise flickering in his eyes. My declaration continued, unaffected and composed.
"I know you know my identity, but I have already divorced Howard. If you want to use me as a knife, I'm afraid it's a bit blunt."
There was no anger in my tone, no hint of personal emotion. It was a matter-of-fact statement about my own affairs. Seeing Leonard silent for an extended moment, I rose to my feet, ready to leave without offering a polite farewell.
