Vera’s POV I woke up slowly in the ward. The pain in my lower back had disappeared. I don't know if it was the effect of the painkillers, but I felt completely healed. There was a lot of noise outside, and I tried hard to identify the owner of the voice, but in vain. "Are you awake? Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?" Howard rushed in when he heard the movement inside, and leaned over to my ear, trying to hear any murmur. "Water…" I collected all my energy to mutter one word. He nodded, dipped a cotton swab in some water, and carefully wiped it on my lips. His movements were gentle as if he were taking care of a porcelain doll. I spotted the person hiding at the end of the crowd. He had shallow scars on his face and half of his face was swollen. He must have been beaten by Howard.
