Ghosts Of The Pasts

The drive to Elena's boutique felt quieter than usual not uncomfortable. Just thoughtful. Adrian Kept one hand loosely against the steering wheel while Elena checked something on her phone beside him, sunlight catching softly against her dark hair. It distracted him more than it should have. Again. “You’re staring,” Elena said suddenly without looking up. Adrian blinked once before looking back at the road. “You notice too much.” A smile appeared on her lips. Dangerous woman. When they finally arrived outside her boutique, Adrian parked but didn't immediately unlock the doors. “I'll probably be late tonight,” he said. Elena glanced at him. “Work?” “Meetings. Investors. The usual.” She nodded easily. “Okay.” No complaints, no clinginess. Strangely disappointing. “I'll send the driver to pick you up,” Adrian added. “You really don’t have to keep doing that.” “I know.” Her eyes narrowed slightly now. “You say that a lot.” “Because you repeat yourself a lot.” Elena rolled her eyes before opening the door but just before stepping out, she paused. “Have a good day, Adrian.” Simple words. Yet somehow they followed him long after she disappeared inside the boutique. _ Vale Inc. stood in the center of the city like a monument to power. Glass, steel and money. The moment Adrian entered the building, employees straightened instantly. Some greeted him nervously, others avoided eye contact completely. He was respected here and maybe feared too. By the time he reached his office, Damian was already waiting with a tablet in hand and coffee prepared the way Adrian liked it. “You’re late,” Damian said casually. “I'm two minutes late . “A tragedy.” Adrian ignored him while loosening the cuff of his shirt. Damian followed him inside. “You have three meetings this morning, lunch with the bord at one, investor conference at four, and your mother called twice.” Adrian sighed immediately. “Why?” “She wants grandchildren by next week.” “Of course she does.” Damian snorted before continuing through the schedule but midway he stopped suddenly. “What?” Damian smirked slightly. “Nothing. It's just interesting.” Adrian looked unimpressed. “Use your words.” “You haven't mentioned Vanessa once this week.” Silence…. Adrian froze slightly before leaning back into his chair and slowly realized Damian was right. He hadn’t thought about Vanessa, not once, not really which made no sense. For years he genuinely believed Vanessa was the love of his life. The woman he would never truly move on from yet ever since Elena entered his life… his thoughts had been occupied elsewhere. Mostly by his wife smiling at him. Laughing softly. Walking around in lingerie looking like temptation itself. Adrian frowned deeply. “That doesn’t mean anything.” Damian looked unconvinced. “Sure.” Adrian expression hardened slightly. “Vanessa left because she had no choice.” There it was the old wound. Damian sighed quietly before setting the tablet down. “Adrian.” “No.” “You don’t know the full story.” “I know enough.” Damian studied his friend carefully because this was the problem. Adrian loved hard once he finally allowed himself to love someone. And after disappeared from his life so suddenly years ago, he turned that heartbeat into something permanent. A ghost he refused to bury but Damian investigated afterward and what he found never sat right with him. “You still believed she loved you?” Damian asked carefully. Adrian jaw tightened “I believed it for years.” “And now?” Silence... Long Silence … Then finally, “I don’t know.” The answer surprised even him. Damian leaned back slightly. “You are changing.” “No I'm not.” “You are.” Damian smirked faintly. “You look less miserable lately.” Adrian ignored that. Mostly because it was true and he hated that it might be because of Elena. Not her specifically… just hated how quickly she affected him. “I'm beginning to like her,” Adrian admitted quietly after a while. The room went still because Adrian rarely admitted emotional things aloud. Damian’s expression softened slightly. “That's a dangerous beginning.” Adrian exhaled slowly, staring toward the city outside his office windows. “But I think can't forget Vanessa .” There it was again the guilt, confusion and conflict. Damian became serious now. “ Then figure it out quickly. Adrian looked at him. “Because Elena deserves better than becoming collateral damage between you and a woman who might not even be who you think she was.” Adrian eyes darkened immediately. “You keep saying that.” “Because it's true.” Damian stood up afterward, picking up the tablet again before heading for the door. But just before leaving he paused. “One day you're are going to realize who Vanessa really was,” he said quietly. “I just hope it happens before you hurt the wrong woman.” Then he walked out, leaving Adrian alone with thoughts he suddenly didn't want. _ Meanwhile, across the city, Elena sat behind the counter of her boutique while organizing invoices when her phone rang. A smile appeared instantly at the caller ID. “Mom.” “ Elena, sweetheart,” her mother said warmly. “How’s married life?” Elena laughed softly. “Complicated.”; “That means you like him.” “Mother.” “I'm right, aren't I?” Elena said nothing, which answered enough. Her mother sounded far too pleased “Bring your husband for dinner tomorrow night?” “Yes. Your brothers will be there too.” Wonderful “You know Adrian is busy.” “Then tell him his mother-in-law insists.” Elena smiled despite herself. Her mother paused before speaking more softly. “You sound happier lately.” That caught Elena off guard because maybe… she was. Even with the confusion. Even with the tension and uncertainty. Somehow Adrian was slowly becoming part of her life in a ways she never expected. I'll ask him,” Elena promised quietly. And after ending the call, she stared out the boutique window thoughtfully… completely unaware that her husband was doing the same thing across the city.
