XANDER As soon as Amara bolted, I didn’t think—I just ran after her. My legs moved on instinct, my chest tight with panic. By the time we both reached the elevator, she finally realized I was right behind her. She stopped, doubled over and panting, her hands gripping her knees as she fought to catch her breath. Her hair clung to her damp forehead, and her whole body trembled slightly. “Why did you run after me?” she asked between breaths. I stared at her, stunned by the question. Wasn’t it obvious? “I’m in Sedona because of you, Amara. Because of you and that little girl lying in that hospital bed,” I said. “What did you expect me to do—just stand there while you ran off like that, especially after that conversation with her mother?
