AMARA It was a quiet day at the café—unusually slow for a weekend. Since things weren’t too hectic for once, I figured it was the perfect time to finally take Ashley to the park. She’d been asking for days, maybe even weeks, but I kept putting it off because of how busy things had been lately. Today felt like a good day to make it up to her. Now, seated on a wooden bench under the soft shade of a tree, I folded my arms across my chest and let my eyes follow Ashley as she giggled on the swings. She had already made a few new friends, and the way she laughed so freely made my heart feel light. “You look like a mother in love,” a man’s voice said from beside me. I turned slightly to see an older man seated on the bench next to mine. He wore a warm smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners.
