He crossed the cabin in four steps and looked at the panel over my shoulder. I let him look before I explained it because it was a habit I was trying to break, the one where I solved a problem out loud before anyone had finished being worried about it.
"Water recycling," I said. "Ninety-four percent efficiency. Yesterday's log shows ninety-one, before I cleared the coil."
He studied the number for a second longer than it required. Then he nodded once. "You scared me for nothing."
He went back to the forward console, and I stood there a moment longer than I needed to, looking at a reading that had just stopped being a problem, feeling the specific, anticlimactic relief of a thing that turns out to be fine.
Thirty-six days left on the secondary display, pale and patient, recalculated at 0001 the way it always was, indifferent to the fact that I had spent twenty minutes the night before convinced it was about to get worse.
By 0700 I was back at the ECLSS panel, because I wanted to watch the system work while it was behaving. There is a kind of trust you build with machines by watching them succeed, not just by fixing them when they fail. I had learned that from my father, although he would have said it differently. He would have said: “you don't know a system until you've watched it do its job correctly, ten times, for no reason except that it could.”
The water loop ran behind a panel the width of my forearm. It looked unremarkable. It did something I had spent four years of graduate study learning to take for granted and had never, not once, actually stopped being struck by.
Every drop of moisture in the cabin went somewhere. Sweat. Breath. The condensation that gathered on the cold metal near the hull at night. The system pulled it out of the air, filtered it through three stages of membrane separation, exposed it to UV sterilization, and returned it to the potable tank as something cleaner than what came out of most taps on Earth. It did not distinguish between sources. It did not know whose breath it was processing. It only knew moisture, and moisture became water, and water became us again.
Ethan came back from the forward console at 0730 and drew a cup from the dispenser without looking at it, the way you drink water when you've done it ten thousand times and stopped noticing the act. He drank half of it in one motion, throat working, eyes on the displays, already thinking about something else.
I watched him do it and thought with the particular clarity of someone who understands a system completely: that water was mine four hours ago.
Not metaphorically. Not in some sentimental sense I would have been embarrassed to say out loud. Literally. I had exhaled it sometime after midnight, breathing slow in my bunk, pretending to be asleep. The humidity capture coil had pulled it from the air around both of us, indiscriminate, mechanical, completely unaware that it was doing anything more than its job. And now it was inside him, becoming part of whatever he was going to do today, and he had no idea, and I had no reason to tell him, and I told him anyway.
"You know that's recycled from both of us," I said. "Not just the tank reserve. Active capture, last twelve hours."
He lowered the cup and looked at it. Then at me. "I'm aware of how the system works, Volkova."
"I mean specifically. Not abstractly." I crossed my arms. "The water you just drank was airborne moisture twelve hours ago. Some of it was mine. Some of it was yours. The system doesn't separate the inputs. It can't. There's no tag on a water molecule that says whose lungs it came from."
He set the cup down slowly enough that I understood the gesture, even though his face didn't change. "Why are you telling me this."
"Because you should understand what you're actually drinking. Most people don't think about it."
"And you do."
"I designed systems like this one. I think about everything they do." I held his gaze, and for a moment neither of us moved, and the cabin was very quiet except for the low hum of the water pump cycling somewhere behind the wall. "We are inside each other's bodies right now, in the most literal sense either of us is ever going to experience that. It's not romantic. It's thermodynamics."
Something shifted in his face that I couldn't fully name, the smallest disruption in the contained line of his jaw.
"You say that like you're trying to make it less than what it is," he said. "Or more."
I didn't answer that. I picked up the cup he'd half finished and drank the rest of it myself, because some part of me wanted to know what it tasted like to drink something he'd already started, even though I had been drinking versions of the same water for three days and knew exactly what it tasted like. Faintly metallic. Clean. Nothing like Earth water, which always carried some trace of where it had been.
He watched me do it. He didn't say anything for a long time.
Houston's contact window opened at 1400. Maya Chen's voice came through with the same careful register from the day before: Gateway relay still silent, Orion telemetry stable, no new information on voice contact with the crew. She used the word stable. She did not use the word intact. I had noticed its absence yesterday and I noticed it again today, and I logged the omission in my shorthand without comment, the way you log a reading that has drifted outside tolerance without yet knowing what it means.
We were down to thirty-six days. The number did not care what word Houston chose.

The defense committee sat behind a long table with my name printed on a folder none of them had opened in the last twenty minutes. Professor Kazarin was at the center, the way a man sits when he has decided in advance how a conversation is going to end.
I had built my thesis around closed-loop life support redundancy in extended-duration habitats, with a section (the section he had circled twice in red, the section everyone in the room had been waiting for me to defend) proposing that strict procedural failover sequencing was, under specific high-load conditions, slower and less reliable than trained operator improvisation.
It was not a popular position. I had known that when I wrote it.
"Dr. Volkova," he said, although I was not yet a doctor and the title was, I understood even then, a small cruelty disguised as formality. "You are proposing that human judgment should override engineered sequence. In a sealed environment. Where a single incorrect judgment kills everyone in the room."
"I'm proposing that engineered sequence has failure modes that human judgment can sometimes catch faster than the sequence can correct for itself," I said. "Not always. Sometimes."
"Sometimes is not a number I can put in a safety certification."
"No. But it exists whether or not you put it in the certification."
He looked at me the way men had looked at me my entire academic life when I said something they couldn't immediately refute and didn't want to agree with. Not anger. Something more tired than anger. The specific exhaustion of a man watching a student insist on being right about something he had already decided was careless.
"You are too reckless for space," he said. Not unkindly. Almost gently, which was worse. "Brilliant. I will not pretend otherwise for the sake of false modesty on your behalf. But brilliant and reckless together do not survive vacuum. They survive exactly until the first time they're wrong."
I had learned, by then, that arguing with a man who has already decided the shape of the conversation only confirms it for him. I passed my defense. I received my doctorate. I did not receive his recommendation for the ESA exchange program I had wanted, and I understood, without why exactly being told directly.
Two years later, on a Soyuz resupply mission with a docking computer failure forty meters from the ISS and eleven seconds before the safety window closed, I made the call to override the automated abort sequence and complete the dock manually, against every procedural instruction in the manual, because it had not been written for the specific combination of failures occurring in front of me.
It worked. Three people did not spend the next four hours venting atmosphere into a tumbling capsule.
Professor Kazarin sent me an email eight months later. Four sentences. He said he had reviewed the incident report. He said the committee's risk models had not accounted for compound failure states of that specificity. He said he had been wrong about the general principle, though he maintained reservations about my specific temperament.
He never said he had been wrong about me.
The email taught me something true and inconvenient. When I am trying to fall asleep I find myself running the math on whether being right and being safe were ever the same question, or whether I had simply spent my entire career mistaking one for permission to stop worrying about the other.
I still did not know. I had built an entire career on not knowing and being right anyway.
The cabin lights had dimmed to the evening setting by the time Ethan spoke again. I was at the aft panel, running the evening diagnostic out of habit more than necessity. He was watching me from the forward seat.
"Can I ask you something," he said. "Not mission-related."
I turned. The thirty-six-day counter sat between us on the secondary display, pale and unmoved by either of us.
"That depends on the question," I said.
He looked at me for a long moment, like he was deciding whether the answer he wanted was worth what it would cost him to ask for it.
"What did you almost say," he said, "on the Gateway. The night in the observation module. Before the alarm went off."
I did not have an answer ready. I had not expected, in three days of careful distance, that he would be the one to open that door first.
