Chapter 11 –
After a few minutes of Hastyn’s retreat,
The shower of money and gold coins fell from the sky towards the man under the tree, resting. The gold coins shined brightly making the man jump in joy and he was impatient to grab all the money.
He was crawling like a kid to insert all the money in his trouser and shirt pockets, thinking, and “I should have brought my bag to collect all the money. Today is my lucky day. I am going to be a top-ranked billionaire tomorrow. My shirt and trouser pockets weren’t enough.”
In a little while, a lady with a red handbag shook him up, all the money stuffed in his pockets were fallen on the ground. Cursing the lady, he grabbed the money again like a madcap.
The lady with a red handbag repeated her actions of shaking him telling, “Wake up, Ted.”
The man replied while collecting the shattered money, “Wake up! I am not dreaming of the shower of money. It’s real. If it’s a dream, don’t wake me up, don’t wake me up.”
The lady with a red handbag yelled, “Ted, wake up. You are jamming the track. Don’t you hear the horn sound?”
The car behind horned in high frequency that it would pierce the ears of any, the driver told the lady, “Is your driver drunken? Can’t you see me?”
The man opened his eyes slowly repeating, “Don’t wake me up, don’t wake me up... (Shocked to the lady in the anger bubbled face) Ooh, Doctor! You are too fast in reporting to the hospital. Grab in.”
Ted, the driver peeped his head outside the window and shouted at the car driver who was behind his car horning repeatedly, “Sorry, fella. I am moving... stop your horn. Can’t you see the board? (Showed him the signboard of the hospital) It’s a hospital zone. You may harm the recovering health of the patients.”
Hastyn commanded, “Start your gear, Ted. I don’t have much time to relax. I have to return by 8.”
Ted pulled the car’s gear and the engine whirled towards the accommodation of doctors. He gazed at the pale figure of Hastyn often and she asked him, “You have any questions? Shoot it, Ted.”
Ted asked her, “Hey Doc, I think you won’t mind my asking?”
Hastyn looked deeply into his eyes keeping her smartphone aside and found his intentions towards her. “You can (gave him a sharp look with her hazel eyes) I know what you are going to ask,” Hastyn marked.
Ted laughed at her, “Doc, you are a mind reader, aren’t you?
Hastyn gleamed at him, “No. I am not a psychiatrist. I am a neurologist.”
“Ooh, you are brain doc. I thought you are a mental doc,” Ted tried to bring his humour and laughed out loud echoing through the closed windows of the car.
The humour of Ted doesn’t amuse Hastyn, it brought an empty look on her face, “Ted, do you consider this as humour? But, I don’t think so. You have bad taste of humour.”
Ted closed his mouth all of a sudden and brings seriousness to his face, “Doc, to be frank. I hope you are good in your figure.”
Hastyn listened with raised eyebrows, “So...”
Ted continued his conversation while taking turns on the road, “So, why do you cover? (Ted mentioned her dressing sense) All young ladies seek attention by exposure. But, you...”
Hastyn removed her hood on her head, “I take your words as my compliments. Ted, I have solar urticaria. That’s why I am covered.”
Ted probed her, “Woo oow, and doc. Only my employer is a doctor, not me. I don’t understand your medical terms.”
Hastyn giggled till her hazel eyes were filled with tears, “It is called sun allergy in simpler terms. Can you understand now, Ted?”
Ted pondered at her, “That’s why you look pale. I thought you were a vampire, to find you cover your body from the sun, while I take numerous turns on the way to MN hospital.”
Hastyn rolled her eyes, “Ted, how do you find it? If you do not hurry up, I going to suck your blood,” she moved towards him grabbing his neck.
Ted’s face was washed out in shock, while Hastyn laughed at him, “Are you serious? Ted, you are missing (poked at his head) two nerves in your brain. If you find time, visit me. I will fix it for you free of cost.”
Ted breathed out and laughed till his stomach ached when they reached the destined place, “Phew... Doc, you are good at humour. We have arrived. This is your accommodation area and I am not allowed inside. So I leave you here. (Ted helped her with her luggage) If you want a ride, you can ring me. Here is my card.”
Ted gave her his card which was in his two fingers and Hastyn grabbed her luggage and the name card from him, “It says, Theodore Roosevelt.”
Ted replied, “Yeah, it's me. My parents wanted me to be a famous person. I was named after the U.S president. But, I like to be called Ted.”
Hastyn mentioned, “I want a ride to MN hospital by 8. Will you?”
Ted assured with his hand gestures, “Why not? I am free. Just ring me up on this number. I will be waiting here. If you don’t mind, I will pick up and drop you, daily.”
Hastyn thanked him, “I would be pleased. As I am new to this ground, I don’t know any.”
*****
After Ted left, Hastyn looked up at the arch of the entrance. The arch of the entrance was noticeable that it was renovated recently. The embossed floral designs in white and green creepers gained Hastyn’s attraction.
Further looking, they specified the name of the residence as, ‘Life Saviours Residence’ in symbols showing doctors in all languages and religions.
After extolling the arch, she walked inside. A voice on her left stopped her. “Excuse me, Miss?”
Hastyn directed to the root of the voice and discovered a small cabin-like chamber with the name board as KNIGHT. She peeped through the open window to locate a middle-aged man in a black uniform holding a visitor note with a pen.
“Can you record your visit in this ledger for my future usage?” the man gave her pen.
Hastyn grabbed the pen from his hand and recorded her existence. She wrote her name in the name column, her profession as a doctor, the purpose of the visit as Shelter.
The middle-aged man beamed with a smile. “Doctor Hastyn?! MN hospital informed me about your arrival.”
She nodded and directed her words. “Yes, and where to stay?”
The middle man introduced himself. “Doctor, I am called Knight here. You can call me the same as others do. Do you have any preferences, choices or priorities in residing like directions, spacious or compact one?”
Hastyn replied instantly, “I prefer the one surrounded by greeneries.”
Knight, the security guard, responded, “Greeneries... it would be airy, spacious, but the one you requested is in the corner. It will be gloomy, noisy at midnight, because of other living things in the greenery. Can you pick another?”
Hastyn smiled, “No. that would be perfect for me. I am hypersensitive to the sun. Also, I would get the feeling of warm touch with nature.”
Knight grabbed the key of Hastyn’s preference from the key stand. He strode outside his chamber and helped Hastyn with her luggage, “Allow me.”
Hastyn handover her luggage to the security guard named Knight and followed him by observing nature silently.
She walked past many narrow and spacious houses. The security guard asked her on their way, “You are allergic to the sun? Unbelievable.”
Hastyn replied with a gasp of disappointment, “Yes, looks like fairy cursed me on my birth.”
Knight, the security guard, turned to look at her face again and replied, “You look pale, lacking sunlight”
Hastyn looked away from him, fixing her gazes on home-returning birds and said, “I desired to walk in sunlight with my bare body, wanted to take the sun bath as everyone does. But my skin is delicate; all my desires become my unfulfilled dreams.”
By the time of their conversation, they have reached the house of Hastyn’s preference. Knight hand her over the key and luggage. “Are you sure, Doctor? Is this you want?”
Hastyn exclaimed, “Perfect with a touch of nature. The echo of screeching birds is like a song to my ears. I will take this.”
Knight bid her, “Whatever you like, keep the keys with you. I have the spares but don’t lose your keys. The room service will be available by every morning upon your demand. The house is clean, and easy to accommodate. I leave the rest with you. Enjoy your days and help many.”
Hastyn closed the door immediately after the security guard went away. She rushed inside the house in search of a bedroom. She established her relief in finding the bed with the perfectly cushioned mattress and threw her body on the mattresses of the bed and relaxed.
Exactly after forty-five minutes of resting, her smartphone vibrated, showing the incoming call.
Hastyn could hardly open her eyes when her ears heard the ringtone of her smartphone. She then rolled on her soft mattresses to pick up her smartphone and found puzzled to see the new number in the incoming call.
Attending it, before she could let her voice, the person on the other side talked in hastily, “Doctor, sorry to disturb at your resting hours, especially before your joining time.”
Hastyn sat on her bed. “Oh no. It’s fine. I was just relaxing. Duty comes first.”
The person from the hospital answered back, “Doctor, we got an emergency case here. Since management did not yet return other doctors from their conference. We left with no choice other than you.”
Hastyn responded, “I am lucky to join my work just before my check-in time, is surely graced by god. By the way, what is the condition of the patients?”
“I’ll mail you all the details.” The person from the hospital passed the messages through her smartphone about the condition of the patient.
Hastyn hurried to the washroom to get ready for the mission of saving the life of a dying patient.
