9 A Day at the Beach It’s our second day in Fremantle. The Captain and I are on a beach, a fantastic beach, north of Perth. So far, so good as far as Mrs Scott is concerned. The Captain seems to have softened her up. Yesterday I stayed on board with Sukey to give Clara a chance to go on a tour of the city. Kate went with her because she wanted to avoid the emotional disturbance of everyone’s departure. They had a good day out together, away from Mrs Scott, and that left today free for me. Clara is looking after Sukey. Unfortunately, Kate and I had to be devious and untruthful again. I don’t like lying to Clara, but it’s the price I have to pay to spend time with the Captain ashore.
