Chapter Two

1364 Words
Sawyer Carter, was not the best worker there was. She was always late. She was always forgetting what she was supposed to be doing. She was a bit scattered brained. Now here she was back in the unemployment office once more. For the third time that month. "Sawyer, I can't keep coming up with jobs for you at the last moment" warns her friend Holly West as she looked up jobs on the computer. "You know I have to have a job! Or I will lose my apartment! Then what I am going to tell Shelly? That we have to move again? I promised her we would not move again" begs Sawyer. Being a single mother was tough. It was even harder when her ex-boyfriend got married and was having a new kid. When he did not want anything to do with the daughter he already had. "Look Sawyer, I am truly sorry. You know I love you and Shelly. I don't know how I am going to find you a job that you can keep. You are not getting good remarks to help me out" warns Holly. "Look I swear the other day I was running late. Shelly was sick. I did not have a sitter" begs Sawyer. "Let me take a look in the files and see if I can find anything. Maybe an office job is not what you need" mumbles Holly as her friend sticks her pencil behind her ear as she typed up something on her computer while they sat there in the unemployment office. "What do you mean Holly? What do you think I will be good at?" asks Sawyer. "Have you ever considered child care?" asks Holly. "Like day care? Working with kids?" asks Sawyer. Holly nods. She removes her pencil from her ear. And jots down a number. "Yes that is exactly what I mean" says Holly as she looks over her computer screen. "No, I never really thought about it. I do take on baby-sitting jobs when I am off work. I need the money" Sawyer mumbles. She did not mind working with kids. She loved kids. She never expected to be a single mother this soon. But she was. Her daughter was only four years old. They had to move many times. Her daughter hated moving. She hated changing preschools to. "I found a job for you. There is a desperate man in need of a nanny. Here is his name. His number. I can give you a few more jobs in that field" offers Holly as she hands over a number. Sawyer looked over the name. Donovan Spencer. He needed a full time nanny. That sounded like it might work. He had one infant child. She could do that possibly. "Sawyer Carter?" asks Holly breaking up Sawyer's thoughts. "Sorry I was thinking that this job might work out for me after all" mumbles an excited Sawyer. "Please don't make me have to find more jobs for you Sawyer. I have no clue you can get this job. Question is can you keep this job?" grumbles Holly. Sawyer did not blame her friend for thinking the worst of her. She was not good at keeping jobs. Something was always coming or getting in her way. Maybe this time would be different. "Who is this Donovan?" wonders Sawyer. "He is a new father. His own father runs Spencer Enterprises. They are very well to do people around here" mentions Holly as she types up things on her computer. "I think I have heard of them. They work alongside of Google right? Something like that in computer software right?" asks Sawyer. "I think so. Pretty much" says Holly. "Look if you want other numbers I can pull up something. But for now that is all I got" "This will do just fine. I will go home and call Mr. Spencer tonight. See if I can get a job interview" Sawyer says happily. "Good luck" sighs Holly. "Thanks Holly. Really, for everything" Sawyer says to her friend. Holly looks up and flashes her pretty smile at last. She nods. "No problem friend" Holly replies as she goes right back to work. Sawyer had to pick up her daughter from day care here pretty soon. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ So she had to make her call while she could. She gets her cell phone out of her purse as she heads out of the unemployment office. She dials Mr. Spencer's office. "Hello, Spencer Enterprises. This is Kendra how I may help you?" questions a lady on the phone. Must be his personal secretary. "Oh I am calling about the nanny job Mr. Spencer has open" Sawyer mutters nervously. "Wonderful! I will buzz you through to him!" says the lady on the other line. "Okay" Sawyer mutters as she waits. She soon hears music while she waits on the other line. She wanders over to the hot dog stand to get some quick lunch before she had to pick up Shelly. She was starving. She did not have any time to get breakfast. "Two dollars and thirty cents" the man demands to her. "But I only wanted one hot dog" grumbles Sawyer. That was pricy for one hot dog. "Two dollars. You get a free beverage" he grumbles as he wipes mustard on his stained off white apron. "Oh sure" says Sawyer as she rummages in her purse for one more dollar. She hands the man the money. She places mustard and other goodies on her hot dog. "Relish is an extra fifty cents miss" the man demands to her after she places it on her hot dog. "Oh fine" she grumbles out loud. She hands him her change. He hands her a beverage without a lid on it. It was not even a diet cola. She heads over to the bench to eat her meal while she was on hold for this Mr. Spencer still. She bites quickly into her hot dog after setting her drink down beside her on the bench. Classical music still played while she waited. She manages to get relish dripping down her shirt. "Crap" she groans. She did not get napkins from the stand. "Excuse me?" someone on the other line says of course at that moment. "Oh sorry. Hi" she laughs. "Hi...um who is calling?" asks the man. "I am calling about the nanny job? I got it from the unemployment office" she rambles on. "I see. Oh yes great. What makes you right for the job?" he asks her. "Are you Donovan Spencer?" she asks. "I am. Who are you?" he ask her. "Mr. Spencer, my name is Sawyer. Sawyer Carter. I am in need of a job. I am good with kids. I have one of my own. A daughter in fact. I will always be around if you need me..." "Hold on a second Miss. Carter. Or is it Mrs.?" he asks her. "Miss" she replies. "Alright Miss. Carter. What makes you qualified to work with my son?" he wants to know. "Well I never have worked in a day care. I just care for my own daughter. I have baby sat a lot. I really need this job Mr. Spencer. You will not regret it if you hire me. I promise" she begs him hopefully as she tries her best to get rid of the stain on her new shirt. "Not exactly what I am looking for" he remarks. She had to get this job. "Please give me a chance" she begs. "I really need this job" "Come on in my office tomorrow. I will give you a proper interview then. How about that at least?" he offers. "Oh that would be wonderful! You will not regret it Mr. Spencer" she says happily. He had to hire her. Maybe once he met her in person he might feel better about hiring her. "Alright. How about meeting me here at the office about two in the afternoon?" he asks. "See you then Mr. Spencer" she agrees. "See you then Miss. Carter" he says before they hang up.
