The next morning, Lily woke up to the persistent hum of her phone vibrating on the bedside table. She stretched and groggily reached for it, her head still a little foggy from the previous night. The text notifications were from her boss, reminding her about the tight deadline at work. But as she swiped through them, another notification caught her eye—this one was from an unknown number.
“Thanks again for helping me last night. I’d love to get coffee sometime, maybe today? – Nathan”
Lily blinked at the screen, her brain still trying to process the message. Nathan? The Nathan Carter? CEO of Carter Enterprises? Her pulse quickened as the weight of the message sank in. He actually remembered her. She had been somewhat distracted the night before, but now, sitting up in her bed, it felt surreal to think that the man she'd helped—Nathan Carter, the business magnate, the media icon—was reaching out to her.
Why would he want to meet again? she wondered. She hadn’t been anything special last night—just a stranger who happened to be in the right place at the right time.
She paused for a moment, uncertain. But then, curiosity crept in, and the thought of a free coffee with one of the most influential men in New York was too intriguing to pass up. Maybe this would be a chance to understand why he had been so drawn to her. Or maybe it was nothing more than him trying to pass the time. Still, something inside her pushed her to respond.
“Sure. Coffee sounds good. What time?” she typed, hesitating only a moment before pressing send.
The reply came quickly: “I’ll pick you up at 3. Looking forward to it.”
Lily's stomach did a little flip. She stared at the screen for a moment, her thoughts racing. Was this really happening? She had never expected that a single moment of kindness could lead to something like this. But now, she was about to meet Nathan Carter—again. The very same man who owned most of the skyline in New York, who ran a billion-dollar company. And here she was, a lowly employee in a mid-tier advertising agency, agreeing to meet him for coffee like it was no big deal.
At 2:45 p.m., Lily found herself standing on the busy sidewalk outside a cozy café in SoHo, waiting for Nathan to arrive. She had dressed carefully, choosing a simple but polished outfit: a black blazer over a white blouse and dark jeans. She wanted to look professional but not too formal—this wasn’t a business meeting after all. She wasn’t sure what this was, but she had a feeling it would turn into something more than just a casual catch-up.
Her mind kept replaying the conversation they had shared the night before. “I’m Nathan Carter.” The words echoed in her head. She had brushed it off at the time, thinking he was just some drunk man in a suit. But now that she had time to process it, she realized how foolish that assumption had been.
What did it mean that he had reached out to her? Was he really just being polite, or was there something else to this? Was he interested in her professionally or… personally?
Her phone buzzed again, pulling her out of her thoughts. She looked down and saw Nathan's message: “I’m outside.”
Lily glanced across the street and saw a sleek, black car pulling up to the curb. Nathan stepped out of the car, looking every bit the part of the wealthy CEO. He was dressed casually, wearing a dark leather jacket that contrasted sharply with his crisp white shirt underneath. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and his sharp features were framed by the soft glow of the afternoon sunlight.
He looked around briefly before locking eyes with her. A slight smile tugged at his lips, and he waved. Lily felt a jolt of something she couldn't quite name run through her chest.
She walked over to him, trying to compose herself, but her heart was pounding. “Hey, Nathan,” she greeted him with a small wave. “Nice to see you again.”
“You too, Lily,” he replied, his voice smooth as always. “Ready for some coffee?”
Lily smiled nervously, trying to keep things light. “Sure, let’s go.” She followed him inside the café, where the warm aroma of roasted beans and pastries filled the air. It wasn’t a fancy place—just a cozy spot with wooden tables and soft lighting—but it felt right for this casual meet-up.
Nathan led them to a table by the window. They sat down, and he ordered for both of them, his voice commanding but friendly. “Two black coffees, please,” he said to the barista, before turning back to Lily with a glint of amusement in his eyes. “How have you been?”
Lily felt a bit out of her element but answered as confidently as she could. “Good. Just keeping busy with work, you know how it is.”
Nathan nodded, leaning back in his chair. His posture was relaxed, but there was still an air of authority about him. “I know. I’ve had a lot of that myself lately. Work never stops, does it?”
“No, it doesn’t,” Lily agreed, laughing lightly. “But I guess that’s why we’re here. To take a little break.”
He smiled at her, the expression softening his normally intense features. “Exactly.” He paused for a moment, clearly weighing his words. “So, Lily, what’s your story? What brought you to New York?”
The question took her by surprise. Most people would have asked about her job, or why she chose advertising, but Nathan had gone straight to the heart of it. She hesitated for a moment, wondering just how much she should reveal.
“Well, I’m originally from upstate New York. Small town. Nothing too exciting, really. I came here because I wanted to do something bigger, something that would challenge me.” She shrugged, trying to sound casual, though her heart was pounding. “The city’s big, and it’s overwhelming, but there’s a kind of energy here you can’t find anywhere else.”
Nathan listened intently, his gaze never leaving hers. “I get that. I came from a small town too,” he said. “I built Carter Enterprises from the ground up. It was never easy, but I had to make it work. New York gives you that kind of opportunity. But it’s also a place where you have to be ruthless.”
Lily could sense the weight of his words. There was something in his tone that suggested he had experienced things she couldn’t even imagine. She didn’t know whether to be intimidated or impressed. Maybe a little of both.
“I get the feeling you’ve been through a lot to get here,” she said, keeping her voice steady.
Nathan gave her a knowing smile. “Everyone has their story. But not everyone gets to write the ending they want.”
Lily wasn’t sure how to respond to that. She simply nodded, unsure of what kind of game Nathan was playing. But she couldn’t deny the intrigue that was building between them.
Before she could ask another question, their coffee arrived. Nathan thanked the barista and took a slow sip of his drink, his eyes never leaving Lily’s. It felt like the space between them was charged with a tension she couldn’t quite define.
“So, Lily,” Nathan said after a moment of silence, setting his coffee down. “I’ve been thinking. I have a project coming up, and I think you’d be perfect for it. But more on that later.”
Lily was taken aback. A project? What kind of project? Was this a business offer, or was he just being polite?
Nathan leaned forward slightly, his expression more serious now. “I think you have potential. And I want to see how far you can go. What do you say?”
Lily swallowed, her mind racing. What did this mean? Her heart skipped a beat. This was no longer just a casual coffee meet-up. This could be the beginning of something much bigger. But what exactly was Nathan offering?
“Sure,” she said, her voice steady despite the swirl of uncertainty in her stomach. “I’d like to hear more.”
Nathan smiled again, the same enigmatic smile that made it impossible to figure out what he was thinking. “Good. I knew you’d say that.”
And just like that, Lily knew her life was about to change. Again.
