Chapter 14: The Confession

507 Words
Nathan’s office was as sleek and polished as always. The walls were lined with glass, offering a panoramic view of the city. Lily stood in front of his desk, her hands clasped tightly in front of her, her heart pounding in her chest. Nathan was seated in his usual chair, but today, his posture was different—slightly more tense, his jaw set with determination. "Lily," he began, his voice soft but firm, "I’ve been thinking a lot about us, about the direction we're heading in. And I think it’s time we address the elephant in the room." Lily swallowed, her throat dry. "What do you mean?" Nathan stood and walked toward her, his movements deliberate. “I know we’ve tried to keep things professional, but it’s clear that we can’t keep pretending anymore. We both know it’s more than just business between us." Lily felt her pulse quicken. "Nathan, I—" “I’m not asking for a decision now,” he cut her off, his voice tight with emotion. "But I need you to understand something. I want to be with you, Lily. But if we’re going to do this—if we’re going to make this real—it can’t just be a secret anymore." Lily’s heart pounded in her chest. She had always known that things couldn’t stay hidden forever, but hearing him say it out loud made it all the more real. "But what about Carter Enterprises? Your reputation? What about everything we’ve worked for?" Nathan took a step closer, his eyes locked with hers. “This isn’t just about work, Lily. This is about us. And I’m not willing to let it slip away just because it’s inconvenient.” Lily’s mind was racing. She had worked so hard to get where she was. Was she really willing to throw it all away for something she wasn’t sure was permanent? She knew Nathan wasn’t the kind of man to make empty promises. But was she ready to make herself vulnerable? "I need time to think," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Nathan’s expression softened, but there was a firmness to it as well. "I’m not asking for an answer right now. Just… just think about it. Because this isn’t something that can stay in the shadows forever. And I need you to be honest with yourself, with me, about what you want." Lily nodded, her mind in turmoil. She knew this moment was coming, but now that it was here, she wasn’t sure she could make the choice. The weight of the decision felt heavier than anything she had faced before. Her career, her heart, everything was in the balance. Nathan didn’t say anything else. Instead, he turned and walked back to his desk, leaving Lily standing there, lost in thought. She had always prided herself on being in control, but now, control seemed like a distant memory. She wasn’t sure what the future held, but one thing was clear—things were about to change, and there was no turning back.
