Over the next few days, Lily found herself unable to focus on work. Every task seemed to take twice as long, and every decision felt harder than it should. She spent countless hours weighing the pros and cons, trying to convince herself that her career came first. But whenever she thought of Nathan, a part of her heart urged her to take the risk, to let herself be vulnerable for the first time in years.
She hadn’t heard from Nathan since their conversation, and it was killing her. The silence between them only made the tension worse. Her heart ached with longing for him, but the fear of what giving in would mean held her back.
It wasn’t until Friday afternoon, as she sat in a meeting with the creative team, that her phone buzzed again. This time, it was a call from her mother. She hadn’t spoken to her in a few weeks, and she was surprised to see her name on the screen.
“Lily, honey, we need to talk,” her mother’s voice came through, strained and urgent. “It’s about your father.”
Lily felt a knot form in her stomach. She hadn’t heard from her father in months. He had been distant ever since her parents' divorce, and the idea of talking to him now unsettled her.
“What happened?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
“It’s not good, Lily. He’s… he’s in trouble. And he’s asking for you.”
Lily’s world seemed to stop for a moment. She had never been close to her father, and the idea of being pulled back into his mess was the last thing she wanted. But there was no avoiding it now. Family came first, even when it was the most inconvenient thing in the world.
“I’ll come as soon as I can,” she said quietly, her voice barely audible.
As soon as she hung up, Lily’s mind was reeling. The next few hours passed in a blur as she scrambled to make arrangements to visit her father. But in the back of her mind, Nathan’s face kept appearing. She had been so consumed by the decision about him, about them, that she had lost sight of the other things that mattered. Now, with her father’s problems looming, she realized that she couldn’t ignore everything else forever.
She was standing at a crossroads, and the weight of the decisions in her life was becoming unbearable. Could she find a way to have both—her career and Nathan? Or would something have to give?
