The week after Lily agreed to help her father, things began to spiral even further. Her father’s financial troubles were far worse than she had originally been led to believe. He had accumulated massive debts and had been involved in multiple shady deals with dangerous people. Now, the consequences were catching up to him, and Lily was forced to step in, coordinating with lawyers, creditors, and trying to keep the situation from going public.
Lily was barely sleeping, spending late nights at the office, and when she wasn't working, she was on the phone or at meetings. Her mind was consumed by the chaos of her father’s mess, and every time she thought she could step away for a moment to breathe, something else would pop up—new threats, new complications.
The weight of the responsibility was suffocating, and the one person who had offered her solace, Nathan, had slowly faded into the background. Every time he reached out, Lily found herself pushing him away, unable to open up about the full extent of her struggles. She couldn’t afford to be vulnerable, not now.
It was late on a Friday when Nathan finally showed up at her office, his figure silhouetted against the dim lights of the building. Lily hadn’t expected him, and her first instinct was to tell him to leave. But when she looked up, she saw the concern etched into his face, and for a moment, she couldn’t bring herself to lie to him.
“Lily,” Nathan said, his voice low but firm. “You’ve been ignoring me for days. I know you’ve got a lot on your plate, but this isn’t working. You’re not dealing with this alone. Not anymore.”
Lily closed her eyes for a moment, a wave of exhaustion crashing over her. She had been running on fumes for days, and her emotions were starting to fracture. “Nathan, I… I don’t have time for this. For us. You don’t understand what’s going on right now.”
Nathan’s expression didn’t change, but his tone became even more insistent. “I understand more than you think. I know you’re dealing with something huge, but pushing me away isn’t going to help. Let me help you, Lily. We’re in this together, remember?”
Lily’s chest tightened. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to feel like she wasn’t alone. But the idea of involving him in the mess that was her life terrified her. She couldn’t afford to let anyone else down. She was already stretched too thin.
“I can’t,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I’m not strong enough for this, Nathan. I’m failing at everything.”
Nathan took a step closer, his hand reaching out to gently touch her arm. “You don’t have to be strong all the time. Let me in, Lily. Let me be here for you.”
For the first time in days, Lily felt a tear slip down her cheek. She wiped it away quickly, but Nathan saw it. His hand slid from her arm to her face, his thumb brushing away another tear. “It’s okay to let go sometimes,” he said softly. “You don’t have to carry this alone.”
The tenderness in his touch cracked something inside her. She had been so focused on surviving, on protecting herself, that she had forgotten what it felt like to lean on someone else. But now, standing there in front of Nathan, she realized just how much she had been depriving herself of. She had been too scared to trust anyone, too afraid of losing control.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, her voice full of emotion. “I’ve been so scared. I didn’t want to drag you into this.”
Nathan’s eyes softened, and he pulled her into his arms. She hesitated for a moment before resting her head on his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. For the first time in days, she allowed herself to breathe.
“You don’t have to apologize,” Nathan murmured. “I’m here, Lily. And I’m not going anywhere.”
