Chapter 20: The Breaking Point

501 Words
Lily’s heart raced as she stared at her phone screen. Her mother’s message had sent a shockwave through her. “Your father’s been taken.” Taken where? By whom? She had so many questions, but no answers. She quickly dialed her mother’s number, but the phone rang and rang before going to voicemail. Her mother never left voicemails. Something was wrong. Lily’s fingers trembled as she put the phone down and ran a hand through her hair. She had promised herself she wouldn’t let her father’s mistakes derail her life, but now, it felt like everything was falling apart. She had given so much of herself to this campaign, to her career, and now her father’s mess was threatening to ruin it all. Without thinking, she dialed Nathan’s number. The phone rang only once before he picked up. “Lily?” His voice was low and filled with concern, like he already knew something was wrong. “I need you,” she said, her voice shaking. “My father’s… I don’t know what’s going on. He’s been taken by someone, and I don’t know how to handle this. I don’t know who to turn to.” Nathan’s voice softened, and Lily could hear the determination in it. “I’m on my way. Don’t do anything until I get there. We’ll figure this out together.” Lily felt a wave of relief wash over her. She hadn’t realized how much she needed him until now. As independent and strong as she had always prided herself on being, she couldn’t do this alone. She had tried, but now, it was clear—she needed Nathan more than ever. Within minutes, Nathan was at her door. He didn’t say anything when he walked in, just pulled her into a tight embrace. Lily sank into him, grateful for his steady presence. The reality of what was happening was overwhelming, and she didn’t know how much longer she could keep it together. “I don’t know what to do,” she whispered, her voice muffled against his chest. “This is too much. My career. My family. Everything’s slipping away.” “You don’t have to do this alone,” Nathan said quietly. “We’ll take this one step at a time. We’ll deal with your father’s situation, and we’ll deal with your career. But first, we need to make sure you’re okay.” Lily looked up at him, her eyes filled with uncertainty. “How can I be okay when everything around me is falling apart?” Nathan cupped her face, his touch gentle but firm. “Because you’re stronger than you think. You’ve been handling all of this by yourself for so long. But you don’t have to anymore. Let me help you.” For the first time in days, Lily let herself truly relax, letting go of the pressure she had been carrying. She still had a long road ahead of her, but for now, with Nathan by her side, she could breathe.
