Chapter 22: The Deal

606 Words
The days were starting to blur together for Lily. It had been over a week since her father had been arrested, and despite her best efforts, the situation was only getting worse. The media had picked up on the story, and the press had been relentless. Every time Lily opened her email, there was another round of inquiries from journalists, all wanting to know the same thing: How did the daughter of a powerful businessman get involved in such a scandal? It was exhausting, to say the least. She had always prided herself on her career, on her ability to navigate the business world with confidence. But now, the spotlight was on her for all the wrong reasons. The pressure was relentless. Nathan had been by her side through it all, offering support, helping with meetings, and even acting as a mediator with some of the more aggressive creditors. But Lily couldn’t shake the feeling that this whole mess might ruin everything she had worked for. Her career, her future—it all seemed so fragile now. One evening, as she sat at her desk, reviewing some legal documents, there was a knock at the door. She didn’t have to look up to know who it was. “Come in,” she called, her voice tired. Nathan stepped inside, his usual composed demeanor replaced with a trace of urgency. “Lily, we need to talk. I just got off the phone with one of the lawyers.” Lily looked up at him, trying to hide the worry on her face. “About what?” “The deal with Vince,” Nathan said, his tone serious. “He’s made us an offer. A way out of this mess.” Lily’s pulse quickened. “What kind of offer?” Nathan sat down across from her, folding his hands on the desk. “He’s willing to drop the charges and leave your father alone. But in return, he wants a share of Carter Enterprises. He’s asking for 20% of the company, and it’s non-negotiable.” Lily’s mind raced. A deal like this could save her father, but it would cost her everything she had worked for. Carter Enterprises was her life—her passion, her future. She had built it from the ground up, and the thought of handing over even a fraction of it to someone like Vince made her stomach turn. “That’s… ridiculous,” she said, shaking her head. “We can’t just give him a part of the company. I won’t let him take what I’ve worked so hard for.” Nathan leaned forward, his gaze intense. “I know. But if we don’t, your father could face years in prison. The media is already digging into Carter Enterprises. If Vince decides to go public with this, it could ruin the company.” Lily clenched her fists, her mind torn. She had always been driven, always focused on her career. But now, it seemed like everything was slipping through her fingers. She didn’t want to compromise, but if she didn’t, her father’s freedom—and the future of Carter Enterprises—would be at risk. “I’ll need time to think about it,” Lily said finally, her voice strained. “This is too much to decide in a day.” Nathan nodded, his expression softening. “Take all the time you need. But remember, whatever you decide, I’m here for you.” Lily gave him a small smile, grateful for his support. But deep down, she knew that the decision she had to make was going to change everything. She couldn’t avoid it forever.
