Chapter 26: Aftermath

604 Words
The day after signing the deal with Vince, Lily’s world felt heavier than ever. She had sacrificed a portion of everything she had worked for, but her father was free—free from the immediate legal troubles that had nearly ruined him. And while she had managed to save Carter Enterprises from the public scandal that would have brought it to its knees, the victory felt hollow. The company was still reeling from the aftermath. News of the deal with Vince had leaked to the press, and the headlines were unforgiving. "Carter Enterprises Sells Out to Crime Boss" read one headline. Another screamed, "Lily Carter Surrenders Power to Shady Businessman." She had known this would happen, but seeing her reputation dragged through the mud like this was a bitter pill to swallow. As Lily sat at her desk, surrounded by the wreckage of her career, the phone buzzed in front of her. It was a call from her mother. "Mom," Lily said, answering the phone, trying to mask the exhaustion in her voice. "What is it?" "Lily..." Her mother's voice trembled. "Your father... he wants to talk to you. He says he’s sorry, and he wants to make things right." Lily sighed deeply, rubbing her forehead. She had been dreading this moment. Her father had always apologized when things went wrong, but the truth was, his words had never matched his actions. "I’ll be there," she said quietly, hanging up the phone. Later that day, Lily found herself once again in her father’s hospital room. The man who had once towered over her with his charisma and power now looked frail, lying in the bed. His eyes were tired, and his voice barely above a whisper as he motioned for her to sit beside him. “I know I’ve failed you, Lily,” he said, his voice hoarse. “But I need you to understand, everything I did... I did it because I wanted to protect you. I thought that if I kept things going, I could give you everything you ever wanted.” Lily looked down, fighting the lump in her throat. She had spent her entire life trying to prove that she didn’t need him, that she could be successful on her own. But here she was, giving up a part of her company to save him. “You didn’t protect me, Dad,” she said softly. “You put me in the middle of your mess. I’ve been trying to keep it all together, but I’m not sure how much longer I can do this.” Her father’s eyes filled with tears, and for the first time in a long time, Lily saw him for what he truly was—a man who had made mistakes but was still desperate for his daughter’s forgiveness. “I know,” he whispered. “I’ve ruined everything. But I want to make it right. I want to help you rebuild, if you’ll let me.” Lily stood up, walking to the window and looking out at the city below. It had been her dream to build something from the ground up, to show the world that she could succeed without her father’s help. But now, she realized that she couldn’t do it alone—not anymore. “I don’t know what rebuilding with you looks like, Dad,” she said, her voice raw. “But I can’t keep pretending like I can handle everything by myself. Maybe... maybe we can try. But only if you’re really ready to change.” Her father nodded weakly. “I am. I will do whatever it takes.”
