After leaving her father’s hospital room, Lily felt a strange mixture of emotions. There was a sense of resolve, of acceptance, but also a deep sadness. She had agreed to try and rebuild her relationship with her father, but that didn’t change the fact that everything had been altered. The path she had walked was no longer the same. Her relationship with her company, with her career, and with her family—everything had shifted.
As Lily sat in her office later that evening, looking over the latest reports, a message popped up on her phone. It was from Nathan.
“We need to talk. Can I meet you at your place tonight?”
Her heart skipped a beat. She had been avoiding Nathan for the past couple of days. After everything with her father and the deal with Vince, she had thrown herself into work, convincing herself that she didn’t have the emotional bandwidth to deal with her relationship.
But now, as she read Nathan’s message, she realized just how much she needed him.
Lily quickly texted him back. “Yes. I’ll be home at 7.”
When Nathan arrived, it was clear that he could see the toll the past few days had taken on her. His eyes were soft with concern as he walked in and closed the door behind him.
“You’ve been avoiding me,” he said gently.
Lily smiled faintly, though it didn’t reach her eyes. “I’m sorry. I just... needed time to think.”
Nathan stepped closer, his hand reaching out to touch hers. “Lily, you don’t have to go through this alone. You don’t have to carry everything on your shoulders.”
Lily bit her lip, holding back tears that had been threatening to surface all day. “I don’t know what I’m doing anymore, Nathan. I’ve lost so much. My career, my father’s health, my company... it feels like everything I’ve worked for has crumbled.”
Nathan stepped closer, his presence solid and unwavering. “You haven’t lost everything, Lily. You still have yourself. You still have me.”
The sincerity in his words broke through her walls. For the first time in days, she allowed herself to lean into him, her face pressing against his chest as she let go of the emotions she had been holding back. The tears came then—quiet at first, but soon, they were flowing freely.
“I’m so tired, Nathan,” she whispered between sobs. “I don’t know how to fix any of this.”
Nathan held her tighter, rubbing her back in slow, soothing circles. “You don’t have to fix everything at once. Just take it one step at a time. And whatever happens, I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
Lily looked up at him, her eyes swollen from crying, but there was a glimmer of something deeper in her gaze. Hope. For the first time in days, she felt like there was a way forward, even if she couldn’t see it clearly yet.
“I don’t know what the future holds, Nathan,” she said, her voice steady now, “but I want to find out with you.”
Nathan smiled softly, brushing her hair away from her face. “Then we’ll figure it out together. No matter what.”
